Inter-App-Audio (IAA) is a technology developed by Apple that is used to transfer audio and MIDI signals between different apps in iOS- based devices. The function was presented at WWDC in 2013 and introduced with iOS 7.

options

Inter-app audio is based on plug-ins . This means that the main app (called the host ) can initiate a connection with the node application . The main app can then send MIDI, accept and send audio signals, send information about the time, and also accept the signals from the line of plug-in apps.

Plug-in apps

The plug-in apps can be of the following types:

  • Musical instruments (can accept and send audio signals)
  • Tone generators (can send audio signals)
  • Audio effects devices (can accept and process audio signals and then send them back to the host app).

Limitations

At the moment, the transmission of audio signals is only possible with a frequency of 44,100 Hz .

Competing Technologies

  • Audiobus
  • Audio unit
  • Ableton Link
