Tony Lip

Tony Lip (born July 30, 1930 in Beaver Falls , Pennsylvania as Frank Anthony Vallelonga ; † January 4, 2013 in Teaneck , New Jersey) was an American actor who was known to a wider audience through his role as Mafia boss Carmine Lupertazzi, Sr. in the television series The Sopranos (seasons 3–5) became known. He also played the gangster Philip Giaccone of the Bonanno family in the film Donnie Brasco .

Life

Lip grew up in the Bronx and was nicknamed Lip 'Lippe' as a teenager because he could talk his way out of trouble. He later adopted this name as a stage name. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the US Army, including in Germany . He worked in the famous Copacabana nightclub . His wife Dolores died in 1999. In 2005 he wrote the book Shut Up And Eat!

Lip died in early 2013 and was survived by his sons Nick Vallelonga and Frank Vallelonga Jr., brother Rudy Vallelonga, and a grandson.

For the film Green Book - A Special Friendship of Peter Farrelly , Lip's son Nick acted as producer and screenwriter. The film tells the story of Tony Lip and Don Shirley . Lip is played by Viggo Mortensen in the film . His son Frank took over the role of Tony Lip's brother Rudy in the film, while the real Rudy Vallelonga plays their father Nicola.
