action

In an industrial suburb in Austria, the merX shop is the only social meeting point for the residents of the place and, despite boring loudspeaker announcements, annoying customer surveys and humming cleaning machines, the only opportunity for young people to get together. But the supermarket manager and some overzealous police officers are only too happy to spoil the teenagers' hanging out. The lively 14-year-old Julian gets to know the two-year-old outsider Marko, with whom he gets along well straight away, because they are united by their hatred of suburban life. The two adolescents come into conflict with the adapted stasis that shapes the adult world; They don't want to be intimidated by the supermarket administration, they cross a border on a summer night and plan to break into the supermarket - one of the boys is killed in the process.

background

Stephan Richter's feature film debut was inspired by actual incidents in which a 14-year-old was shot by a police officer on August 5, 2009 while breaking into a Merkur market in Krems an der Donau at night . As a result of this incident, an officer was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment for negligent homicide in particularly dangerous circumstances, and the legality of the use of firearms in Austria was heatedly discussed. Columnist Michael Jeannée's comment in the Kronen Zeitung , “Those who are old enough to break in are also old enough to die”, was voted Unspruch of the Year in a different form in 2009 for the Austrian Word of the Year .

reception

Age rating

The film is FSK 12 in Germany. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The story of emptiness, consumption and powerless rebellion is told in a calm and atmospheric way. The staging focuses on the protagonists and the location of the supermarket. The gloomy mood and individual depictions of violence can emotionally overwhelm children under the age of 12, but already 12-year-olds are able to put them into context and process them. "

Reviews

Even if one of us is not a classic youth film, it tells about young people and is told from their perspective. The viewer can watch them make their fateful decisions. Richter directed the film without a raised index finger. The Viennale speaks of Eine von uns of a special film and of a calm, precise and dense narrative that is a little sensation in Austrian cinema. The employees of the Kino macht Schule (from the film distribution film shop ) describe Richter's work as credible and inspired and offer accompanying materials to the film.

Use in school lessons

In November 2016, One of Us was presented by kinofenster.de as “Film of the Month”. The online portal also offers materials on the film for use in lessons. Angela Sirch writes there that everyone is looking for a way out of the dreariness in the film: “Some numb themselves with alcohol, others sink into great silence and the young people really just want to scream. But it is precisely the silence of the film that makes these suppressed screams all the more noticeable. The cycle of consumption and boredom goes on forever and only seems to come to a standstill due to a tragic event. "Richter succeeds in not judging the protagonists and he refrains from blaming, because every figure is a product of its oppressive environment, so Sirch on.
