Funerary sayings are verses , quotations or other sayings on tombs that refer to the deceased or to his life. They can be religious or contemplative, but sometimes also humorous or sarcastic.

The custom of tombs arose in ancient Egypt and became widespread in the Roman Empire . In Europe it has been found on numerous tombstones since the Middle Ages and on simple tombstones in the 19th and early 20th centuries . The custom has become rarer in the last few decades.
