Austrian word of the year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian word of the year ( oewort ) has been chosen since 1999. The separation from the German word of the year took place after it became clear that when choosing the originally German word and unword of the year, more and more words were available that were coined by German politicians or the media but had no relation to Austria . The research center for Austrian German at the Karl-Franzens University in Grazsince then has determined the word and word of the year, since 2002 an additional saying and since 2006 a word of the year. A youth word of the year has also been chosen since 2010 .

Bad word of the year

In Austria, the bad word of the year has been determined since 1999.

year Bad word of the year Explanation
2020 Corona party The celebrations or meetings that were held because of the public gatherings of larger groups of people in the private sector, which was prohibited in the corona pandemic, were repeatedly criticized as major corona spreaders.
2019 b 'open layer "A typically Austrian trivialization with which statements - specifically in the 'Ibiza video' - about party donations and potentially illegal deals are to be played down"
2018 General Data Protection Regulation Regulation of the European Union for the in itself important objective of protecting private electronic data with poor implementation
2017 Alternative facts US government word created to cover up false statements made by a public official
2016 Öxit This designation was used in the context of the federal presidential election for a possible exit of Austria from the European Union.
2015 Special structural measures This euphemism from the mouth of the former Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) is the direct opposite of the word of the year. It actually refers to a kilometer-long fence on the Slovenian border.
2014 Negro conglomerate
Andreas Mölzer
Andreas Mölzer described the European Union as such in a European election campaign speech because of what he believed to be an increasing chaos in the EU.
2013 national friendly This word was used by a campaigning party ( FPÖ ) as a disguised synonym for " xenophobic ".
2012 Presumed innocent Derived from the phrase "The presumption of innocence applies", which was often read in the media due to numerous cases of corruption. “The phrase was first shortened to an adjective and then converted into a noun, which in the shortest possible way suggests the negative facts of legal debt. On the one hand, it causes a prejudice, but at the same time conceals this fact because it is expressed that it is an innocent person. "
2011 Daughter sons The shortening of the newly formulated line “Home of the great daughters, sons” of the Austrian national anthem was a very unfortunate formulation, as it could unintentionally refer to the male grandchildren born of daughters. The poorly designed verse was the reason that a concern of women was questioned from various sides. It is the inadequate linguistic form and the associated reactions that make the expression a nonsense. The controversial phrase was changed in November 2011 to “home of big daughters and sons” and then decided.
2010 humane deportation The fact that the deportation of people abroad is an act of state violence and is therefore not humane , especially when it concerns children, makes this term contradictory and therefore a nonsense from both a linguistic and a factual point of view. He conceals the recent frequent deportation of well-integrated immigrants , who are opposed to the immigration laws, and goes back to the interior minister, who announced in October 2010 that she had made deportations more humane .
2009 Analog cheese From a linguistic as well as a factual point of view, this is a nonsense because it stands for a fraudulent label . The product referred to has nothing to do with cheese […]. Linguistically, however, due to the German word formation rules, the impression is given that it is “cheese” after all.
2008 Profit warning The word obscures the truth, as it does not mean a warning of profits, but rather the reporting of diminished profits or losses. It thus stands for the opaque processes in the world of finance and banking.
2007 Binge drinking Expression of the scandalization of a negative societal and social development and contributes to the stigmatization of the victims.
2006 Bacon The word itself is a linguistic new formation which, in addition to the mocking “ätsch”, also contains the unclear element “peck”. This arouses associations with terms as diverse as “bacon”, “peck”, “packet” and “package”, which creates additional irritation. The term stands for the increasing aggressiveness in advertising and in society.
2005 Negative immigration A nonsense because it conceals the intended content in several ways. On the one hand, it expresses a clear contradiction in terms, since immigration means an increase in the population, which is turned into its opposite here with the negative word element. In this way, the word negative immigration can be used to cover up the desire for undesirable people to emigrate to their home countries. In addition, it is ambiguous in other respects, as it can also mean that there is a form of immigration that can be assessed negatively. The word stands in a long series of new formations of technical-bureaucratic origin, all of which are formed with the element "negative" (negative capital, negative growth, etc.).
2004 Boyish stupidities In the seminary of the diocese of St. Pölten , a candidate for the priesthood downloaded child pornographic photos from the Internet in autumn 2003. Subsequent rumors of homosexual relationships in the seminary were later confirmed. The local bishop of the diocese, Kurt Krenn , publicly referred to the events in the seminary as “stupid things”. In the further course an Apostolic Visitator examined the events in the seminary and Bishop Krenn resigned from his office on September 29, 2004.
2003 Vested interests
2002 resignation from resignation This is Jörg Haider
2001 non-resident
2000 social marksmanship
1999 Schübling Name of a person in custody
