Working group for cartographic toponymy

The Association for cartographic toponymy (AKO) is a coordinating body in Austria dealing with geographical names departments of the federal government and the states , as well as more competent scientific institutions and the private cartography .

Activities and goals

The aim of the AKO, founded in 1969, is to promote the standardization of the geographical names of Austria in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations . For this purpose, the AKO holds meetings twice a year, which primarily serve to exchange information and experience with regard to questions relating to names.

Represented in the working group are the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying , Statistics Austria , the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management , the Federal Ministry of National Defense , the nomenclature resp. Place name commissions of the individual Austrian federal states, the Austrian Standardization Institute, the Austrian Geographical Society, the Institute for Dialect and Name Lexicons as well as the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , the Institute for Geography and Regional Research of the University of Vienna , the Austrian Society for Name research etc.

AKO representatives take part in the meetings of the Standing Committee on Geographical Names (StAGN), which also take place twice a year, and in the corresponding committee work of the United Nations ( UNGEGN ).

history

The AKO was founded in 1969 as a department for cartographic place-naming within the Austrian Cartographic Commission (ÖKK) in the Austrian Geographical Society (ÖGG). In 1994 it came into contact with the Austrian Academy of Sciences and subsequently renamed itself the Working Group for Cartographic Topography .
