Cupanis timeless ( Colchicum cupanii ) is a species of the timeless family (Colchicaceae). It is a poisonous plant species common in the Mediterranean area. In contrast to the autumn timeless ( Colchicum autumnale ), its flowers appear together with the leaves.

Cupanis Timeless is a perennial herbaceous plant . This geophyte rests as a tuber in the ground during the dry season . After the first autumn rains, two (to three) linear-lanceolate leaves from 1 to 1.8 cm wide and up to 15 cm long appear per sprout .

At the same time, one to five (rarely more) hermaphroditic, threefold flowers open . There are six bloom bracts of the same shape , which have grown together from a perigone tube up to 8 cm long with 2.5 cm long, narrow elliptical perigone lobes . The perigone lobes are pale pink to light purple and have a distinct purple longitudinal vein. The six 2 to 3 mm long anthers are usually black-purple before they open. Three carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown, but which is initially hidden deep in the corolla tube. A 1.5 cm long capsule fruit develops by spring .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54.

Distribution and location

Cupanis Zeitlose inhabits garigues , grass and rock corridors in the central and western Mediterranean region . Its distribution center is in southern Italy , on Sardinia and Sicily . Further sub-areas are located in Liguria and southern France , in Albania and Greece (there also on Crete ) and in North Africa .

Systematics

The first description by the Italian botanist Giovanni Gussone was published in 1827. The specific epithet cupanii honors the Sicilian Franciscan priest and botanist Francesco Cupani .

There are two subspecies:

Colchicum cupanii cast. subsp. cupanii : It occurs in France , Sardinia, Sicily, Italy, Greece, Crete, Algeria and Tunisia .
Colchicum cupanii subsp. glossophyllum (Heldr.) Rouy : It occurs from southwestern Albania to southwestern Montenegro and to Greece.
