I bims

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I bims is a deliberate misspelling of Ich bin’s . The expression is seen as part of the German youth language and was named Youth Word of the Year 2017 by the Langenscheidt publishing house . In Austria in the same year the phrase “Hallo, I bims!” Was declared youth word of the year .

Origin and meaning

The expression "I bims" as well as the frequent use of the phrase "from ... her" were originally coined by the Austrian rapper Money Boy . These spellings became more widespread on the now very popular Facebook page Nachdenkliche Sprüche with pictures , the operator of which appears under the pseudonym "Willy Nachdenklich". According to this, the posted text and image contributions satirize “all these sayings that are constantly posted on Facebook”. The texts published in this context deliberately contain many linguistic errors and thus humorously refer to the poor spelling and grammar skills of many social media users. "I bims" was on the page "Thoughtful sayings with images" as the running joke as the phrase "... from here," which is now usually called "vong ... her" spoof was.

Because of the frequent use of the phrase "from ... her", this style of language is often referred to as the "Vong language" ; “I bims” is their most popular expression. Originally created as a pure pastiche, the wording has also become part of the actual youth language due to the widespread media coverage.

Reception and marketing

On November 17, 2017, Ibims was selected by the responsible 20-person jury as the German Youth Word of the Year 2017 and thus prevailed among 30 terms available for selection. In the previous, non-binding online survey, which recorded a record number of participants with around one million people who voted, the printout came in last. The reasoning of the jury for having decided in favor of this candidate was, among other things, that Ibims is known nationwide in Germany and is representative of many other terms in the so-called “ Vong language ”. Other nominated words are only used regionally, such as the leader in the online survey, goes fit , who is mainly known in the Ruhr area . However, as in previous years, the selection of the youth word led to a debate as to whether the respective “youth words of the year” reflect the youth language actually used .

On November 8, 2017, “I bims” was registered as a word mark by a company at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) . In the following year, however, the trademark had to be deleted again at the request of a third party.
