Level limbo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Level limbo is a catchphrase that describes the constant drop in level, for example on German television . It is a noun compound from “level” and “ limbo ”. In 2010 Niveaulimbo was voted “ Youth Word of the Year ” in Germany.

etymology

Niveaulimbo is made up of the words “level” and “limbo”. Here, level means the cultural, linguistic or interpersonal level. Limbo is a dance game in which the dancers dance with their backs bent back under a pole, which is placed lower with each new dance round. Figuratively speaking, level limbo describes a process in which the level of the previous level is undercut with each new level.

meaning

With level limbo is meant the thoughtless or approvingly accepted gradual drop in level. Examples are:

  • The drop in the level in the television program of private channels with broadcast concepts such as Big Brother , Scripted Reality , Das Supertalent or jungle camp that are increasingly geared towards satisfying lower stimuli ( voyeurism , exposure, lust for disgust or the degradation of others) .
  • A verbal exchange of blows between two or more people who try to outdo each other with low-level comments, gestures or actions.
  • Running out of control parties .
  • Pointless conversations.
  • Mutual telling of increasingly vulgar jokes.

The term level limbo expresses criticism and distancing from the so-called processes. The “actors” of the Niveaulimbo therefore underestimated the level tolerated by the observers and / or expose themselves to be ridiculous through their behavior.

Explanation of the jury

The reasoning of the jury for the selection of level limbo in front of Arschfax , egosurfen , Speckbarbie and nice one :

“This year's jury, which […] made its decision unanimously, was impressed by the combination of the two terms 'level' and 'limbo' into a new, independent word with a completely different meaning. The jury justified its choice with the statement that through 'level limbo' the current development of the TV landscape with regard to its entertainment formats is viewed critically by the young people and commented accordingly. Furthermore, the young jury in particular found that the term can be used in many areas, as shown by a large number of so-called "level limbo" groups on Facebook or StudiVZ aktuell. '"

The “Youth Word of the Year” is selected every year by a jury headed by Langenscheidt- Verlag.
