The Linné University ( Swedish : Linnéuniversitetet ) came into being on January 1, 2010 as a merger of the University of Växjö and the University of Kalmar. It is a state university with two campuses in the Swedish cities of Växjö and Kalmar . It is named after Carl von Linné and has around 30,000 students, with around 21,000 studying at the Växjö site.

Linné University was formed from Växjö University and Kalmar University. The University of Växjö goes back to the branch of the University of Lund , founded in 1967 , which became an independent university in 1977 (Swedish: Högskolan i Växjö ) and received university status in 1999. Kalmar University was founded in 1977.
