Carl Fredrik (von) Gertten (born April 3, 1956 in Malmö ) is a Swedish filmmaker and journalist .

Life

Gertten worked as a journalist for daily newspapers, radio and television in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1995 he published the travel book Ung man söker världen (Young man seeks the world). He wrote for the daily Arbetet from 1990 until it was discontinued in 2000. From 2001 to 2003 he worked for the newspaper Kvällsposten . He was also a producer for documentaries and entertainment shows for the Swedish TV channels SVT , TV 4 and TV 3 .

In 2009, Gertten's production company WG Film was sued by the Dole Food Company for defamation after a US screening of its documentary Bananas! * . The court ruled in favor of his production company. The lawsuit became the subject of Gertten's documentary Big Boys Gone Bananas! * .

With the film Push - For the Basic Right to Live, he documented a global crisis on the housing market in 2019. In his review for the film service, Wolfgang Hamdorf sees a strength of the documentary in the commitment and partiality of its maker: “ Push - For the basic right to housing is a polyphonic and exciting inventory of a global crisis. The strength of the clever film, which some will probably label as ideological, lies in its committed point of view and the courage to ask about the background and to name those responsible beyond documenting the misery and an empathetic look at the victims of the crisis. "
