Małgorzata Szumowska (born February 26, 1973 in Krakow ) is a Polish film director .

Life

Małgorzata Szumowska first studied art history for two years at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow before she began studying directing at the Łódź Film School . In 1998 she completed her studies with a diploma. Her film debut came out in 2000. For this film Szczęśliwy człowiek she was nominated for the 2001 European Film Award in the Discovery of the Year category. She also received this nomination for her second film Leben in mir , which was made as a German-Polish co-production. In 2005 she was one of the group of directors who shot one of 13  short films for Polish television TVP on the 25th anniversary of Solidarność's founding , which then premiered under the title Solidarność, Solidarność on the anniversary of the events of August 1980. Other directors were u. a. Filip Bajon , Ryszard Bugajski , Feliks Falk , Robert Gliński , Jan Jakub Kolski , Juliusz Machulski , Piotr Trzaskalski , Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi .

In 2008, her film 33 Scenes from Life with Julia Jentsch was awarded the special jury prize at the Locarno Film Festival . The film also won the Polish Film Prize 2009 in the categories of Best Film , Best Music , Best Editing and the Audience Award.

Her film drama W imię… (festival title: In the Name Of ) addresses the homosexuality of a Catholic priest. The film was invited to the 2013 Berlinale competition . The year before, she was represented in the Panorama section of the festival with The Better Life .

For the film Body , a film drama about anorexia and esotericism, she was awarded a Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2015 Berlinale and received the Polish Film Award for Best Director and Best Film in 2016 . In the same year she was appointed to the jury of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival . In 2017 she received the Silver Bear for The Mask at the Berlinale .

Małgorzata Szumowska is the daughter of journalists Dorota Terakowska and Maciej Szumowski. Her brother Wojciech Szumowski is a documentary film director. She was married to the cameraman Michał Englert.
