Taunts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taunts is a 2003 published comic of Iranian Marjane Satrapi . Like the autobiographical world success of the author Persepolis, the comic is black and white, but the description of the conversation and the stories abolish the usual structure of the comic with the pictures in boxes. There are many passages with monologues and dialogues that manage entirely without visualization.

content

The author does not tell a linear story, but rather describes a conversation that the women of her family had during their youth after lunch. The men retired to nap and the women tidied up the kitchen. Then the author made the samovar , a tea, for the group. In the absence of the men, the women tell each other what they saw and heard about events that open up an unusual view of the life of women in Iran.

The opium-addicted grandmother, who respects her (third) husband by his last name, says that one shouldn't talk badly about the dead because they are so defenseless. Nevertheless, she tells of her deceased acquaintance that she had lost her virginity three weeks before their wedding and that she, the grandmother, advised her to cut herself with a razor blade to simulate tearing the hymen . The girlfriend didn't cut herself, but the husband's testicles.

Another said that although she had three children, she had never seen a penis. The third describes the circumstances of their wedding when, at the age of 13, she married an officer who was 69.

There is the story of the woman who married a communist before he fled to Germany from the Shah and had a different relationship there, while the wife, after arriving in Europe, only had to wait in a room for his return. Eventually she met a married German, whose lover she became. When he did not leave his wife, she moved back to Iran.

Others in the group are of the opinion that being the lover of a married man is advantageous because he only shows his moods and quirks to his wife, while always remaining charming and attentive to the lover.

Other stories are about attempts to get the lover to marry through white magic, cosmetic surgery , the restoration of virginity, the wedding of an 18-year-old to an Iranian multimillionaire who did not travel to the wedding but turned out to be homosexual, and men, the women cheated on the jewelry given away on the occasion of the wedding.

reception

Most critics , like Satrapi's other works, received taunts positively. In the intro one wrote: "As always, the greatest thing about these stories is that the complexity of the topics is covered in fine to coarse humor [...]"

At the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême , the comic was nominated for the Prix du meilleur album in 2004.
