occupation

Chicken with plums (original title: Poulet aux Prunes) is a German-French-Belgian film by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud from 2011 . It is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Marjane Satrapi.

action

The film is set in Iran in the 1950s. The country vacillates between the democracy movement and the Shah regime. Nasser-Ali Khan is one of the greatest violinists of his time, but in a marriage dispute, his wife destroys his beloved violin. Nasser-Ali suspects that he can no longer play like he did before. His teacher had given him the instrument decades earlier, after the unfulfilled love for the beautiful Irâne Nasser-Ali's playing had enriched it with the crucial note and gave it a pure sound.

Nasser-Ali fell in love at a young age with the beautiful Irâne, who returned his love. But the young woman's father had insisted on marrying her to an officer. The unhappy love for Irâne has accompanied him all his life on the one hand, but also inspired him on the other.

The aged Nasser-Ali goes in search of a new violin that has the same magic. But shortly after buying such an instrument, he meets his Irâne, who is now a grandmother and pretends not to recognize him. In his desperation he just wants to die. He plays through different types of death, but none wants to meet his requirements. So he lies down in his bed, determined to die within the next eight days. Looking back on his life, he relives the tragic moments of his life and looks into the bleak future of his children.

background

The title of the film alludes to an Iranian national dish, in the film it is the main actor's favorite dish.

The film, which was recorded entirely in the studios and outdoor sets of Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam in 2010 , was released in German cinemas on January 5, 2012.

reception

Spiegel Online praised the visual ideas of the film, but “where 'Persepolis' (who told of Satrapi's own childhood in Iran) had a clear line, passion and fire, Chicken with Plums (which is inspired by the story of her great-uncle) has one frayed Dramaturgy that touches on a lot and doesn't tell anything. More of a patchwork quilt than a noble Persian. But always nice to look at. "

For the Süddeutsche Zeitung , chicken with plums was “a wonderful”, “surreal melodrama”. The FAZ, on the other hand, regretted that Satrapi and Paronnaud “used farce instead of Farsi in their feature film Chicken with Plaume (n).
