action

Vince Ferro lives with his parents and two sisters in Talbot, Ohio . Because the father is in hospital and the family can no longer pay for medical treatment, they had to take out a mortgage on the parental home. As an electrician, Vince repairs the wiring in his neighbor's house. He overhears a conversation about a mysterious letter, the content of which is supposed to bring the impoverished neighbor back to money. When he dies of a heroin overdose, Vince steals the letter before the police can confiscate the registered mail .

Vince follows the instructions in the letter and takes a train and taxi out into the country, where he is followed by plainclothes police, but who ultimately lose his track when a contact picks him up and drives him into the forest. Arriving at a country estate, Vince realizes too late that, as candidate number 13, he has become an involuntary participant in an illegal Russian roulette game in which wealthy gamblers bet on their candidates and their survival. The candidates have to line up in a circle several times and, when a lamp lights up, shoot the head of the person in front of them until only five of the candidates survive. By luck and chance, Vince survived the first rounds of Russian roulette as an outsider. While three of the remaining candidates are allowed to go with a small profit, Vince has to finally compete in a final against Ronald Lynn Bagges, who had already won the three previous finals. Vince shoots Ronald and receives his share of $ 1.85 million.

When Vince tries to drive back home, he is recognized by a taxi driver at the train station and arrested by the police. However, he manages to hide his winnings in a garbage can beforehand. In the interrogation that followed, Vince argues that he never got into the mansion where the gambling took place because he was not recognized and his neighbor was actually expected. He is let go for lack of evidence. The garbage can has since been emptied, but Vince manages to find the money and send it to his mother in a package. When Vince finally starts his journey home by train, he meets Jasper Bagges on the train, who has lost all his bets and his brother Ronald to Vince. Jasper shoots Vince and steals his bag, but without realizing that it contains no more money.

reception

“13 is staged tightly and intensely, the duel scenes are sometimes unbearably tension,” is the verdict of the Cinema editorial team . It is an "exciting thriller about a bestial, illegal pistol tournament that filthy rich sadists arrange for their perverse pleasure" . At 13 there is a "bloated B-movie with A-Stars" , which was given a neutral rating with three out of five possible points.

Jan Hamm from Filmstarts is of the opinion that the film suffers “from a bumpy dramaturgy” . "The Neo-Noir starts tough and concentrates its most intense moments in the middle of the film" , because "Vince wanders around for about half an hour without knowing what's going on" . The "top-class minor characters" operate "mere image maintenance" . "With the ice-cold symbolization of economic despair, '13' is enormously captivating at times" , "but due to the muddled narrative style and an almost tiring, experienced cast, Babluani remains stuck in mediocrity at the second attempt" . Accordingly, Hamm awards two and a half out of five possible points.

Awards

Géla Babluani was awarded the Honorable Mention film prize at the 2013 Louisville Fright Night Film Fest .
