An adventure in space and time (original title: An Adventure in Space and Time ) is a British television film from 2013 , in which the story of the creation of the cult television series Doctor Who is told.

action

In 1963 the BBC came up with the idea of a new science fiction series about a quirky old man known as The Doctor who travels through time and space with a blue emergency call cell. The young Verity Lambert is commissioned to produce the series by BBC Director "Drama and Acting" Sydney Newman . Aging actor William Hartnell is slated for the role of Doctor. After the first episode, the BBC plans to leave the production at just four episodes due to insufficient audience ratings, as the media are dominated by the fatal assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy the day before the first episode was first broadcast in the USA . It is only thanks to Verity Lambert's tenacity that the series continues to be produced. With their fresh ideas, the series becomes a complete success.

Hartnell initially flourished in his role of doctor, but after three years he was no longer acceptable for the production company for health reasons. In 1966 the Doctor role was replaced by actor Patrick Troughton , played by Reece Shearsmith. During Hartnell's moving final sequence as the 1st Doctor, the 11th Doctor appears next to him on the console of the TARDIS , who - as in the main series at the time of production - is played by Matt Smith .

Trivia

David Bradley retook the role of the first Doctor in the episode The Doctor Falls of the regular television series in 2017 . This makes Bradley the third actor of the first Doctor in the series. The first Doctor was filled with Richard Hurndall in 1983 in the special episode for the 20th anniversary, The Five Doctors , because Hartnell had already passed away at this point.
