George Clinton

The American music group Parliament , one of the icons of P-Funk , was founded in 1968 by George Clinton .

The band was Clinton's second big project alongside Funkadelic, and Clinton relied for the most part on the same musicians - the double naming was mainly due to contractual reasons in connection with his record company .

history

George Clinton (2007)
Bootsy Collins

After recording their first single Testify, which had limited success, the group got problems with their band name, so George Clinton was forced to continue under the name Funkadelic for the time being. This was certainly the reason why the album Funkadelic was released in 1969, a year before the first Parliament album in 1970 entitled Osmium . Clinton and his colleagues, including such famous names as Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell in the early years , continued to work under the name Funkadelic in the following years. In 1974, Up for the Down Stroke Parliaments was released, the second album, which can be considered the first P-Funk album and which reached number 10 on the American R&B charts. In 1975 the third album was released with Chocolate City .

Clinton was able to strengthen the band around Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley in the meantime . In the same year, 1975, Mothership Connection, the first of three consecutive legendary albums by Parliament, was released. It reached number 13 on the pop charts as well as platinum status. Only half a year later, in 1976, The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein, an equally energetic masterpiece of the P-Funk era, albeit not as commercially successful as its predecessor. Although internal quarrels were already emerging in 1977, this year Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome released the most successful Parliament album. The title Flash Light was number one on the US R&B charts for three weeks. In the same year the album Live: P. Funk Earth Tour was released .

Motor Booty Affair followed in 1978 and Gloryhallastoopid (Or Pin the Tale on the Funky) in 1979 . The official last album by Parliament was Trombipulation and was released in 1980. In the following time contractual difficulties and a certain creative exhaustion were the decisive factors for Clinton to continue working under another name. Computer Games was released as a solo album in 1982 . George Clinton's band was renamed P-Funk Allstars in the mid-1980s. One of the best recordings of this band is the album Live at the Beverly Theater in Hollywood from 1990 with drummer Dennis Chambers .

The Rolling Stone listed Parliament and Funkadelic at number 58 of the 100 greatest musicians of all time , and Prince named the two songs Mothership Connection (Star Child) (1975) and Do That Stuff (1976) two of 55 songs that have inspired him musically .
