Funkadelic was an African American funk band that enjoyed success in the 1970s and 1980s. Its members included the funk bassist Bootsy Collins and the guitarist DeWayne McKnight , who was also musical director.
Band history
Funkadelic was originally the background band for The Parliaments, a vocal group around the founder George Clinton , which later called itself Parliament . As part of the naming problems surrounding the group (approx. 1969), she renamed herself in the course of the psychedelic fashion at the end of the 1960s and practiced a different style of music until the name Parliament could be used again. From this point on, both groups, Parliament and Funkadelic, existed at the same time and brought out releases on different labels, which was absolutely unusual in the 1970s. In the late 1970s, this release policy led to numerous interconnected lawsuits that eventually resulted in the unofficial breakup of this band (parts of which were revived as P-Funk All Stars , among others ). The last long-playing record By Way of the Drum was recorded around 1988, but was only released in 2007, as the record company did not expect it to be a commercial success. All releases after that were best-ofs, greatest hits and the like in ever new combinations.
Otherwise it is difficult to differentiate, as Funkadelic consisted of practically the same cast as Parliament when it came to publications and live performances. However, their style of music was more rock- oriented than Parliament. They are therefore considered to be the forerunners of funk rock or crossover .
In 1997 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . The Rolling Stone listed Funkadelic and Parliament 58th of the 100 greatest musicians of all time .
