She Past Away is a gothic rock band from Bursa, Turkey, founded in 2006 . The duo became internationally known with their first album Belirdi Gece in 2012 and was booked for worldwide performances.

The group was founded in 2006 by Volkan Caner and İdris Akbulut. Both musicians were previously active in other unknown music groups. About the musical background of the previous projects Akbulut explained that these styles corresponded to "from death metal to indie rock ". The decision to present songs in Turkish was first made when She Past Away was founded. The musicians stated that it seemed more natural to them and that it was easier to express themselves compared to the English language used in previous projects. From 2009 the band performed live in Bursa. However, interest in the group quickly ebbed because, according to Akbulut, there was no larger local scene and the small existing community “gradually lost interest in [She Past Away] and the scene, and in itself " Has. Meanwhile, the musicians relocated to the nearby metropolis of Istanbul . There the group signed a contract with Remoov Records , whose co-initiator Doruk Ozturkcan contributed initially as a live musician, then later as a full band member. In 2010 the first EP Kasvetli Kutlama was released . The debut album Belirdi Gece followed three years later and was initially only distributed digitally internationally. Only in Turkey was a vinyl version available through Remoov Records. Nonetheless, the album received many positive reviews and gained enough popularity to allow the group to perform in most European countries as well as Mexico. Ozturkcan admits that the multitude of international appearances could be due to the origin of the group and an accompanying "exotic bonus". Despite this possible link between their origins and their success, the musicians refuse to be labeled as influenced by Turkish culture. Öztürkcan calls the fact that the group represents an alternative Turkey abroad as a mirage. The acceptance of the group abroad means that it is tolerated in Turkey, does not change the living conditions in the country itself. One year after the album was first released, the album was released internationally on the Greek label Fabrika Records , which alongside She Past Away further popular newcomers of the dark wave are marketed through re-releases . In 2015 Akbulut left the group. In the same year, the Belgian fashion designer Kris van Assche used the group's music to present his Dior summer collection. A step that She Past Away declared in retrospect as a mistake, as it addressed an audience that could not identify with the band's music. The second album Narin Yalnızlık was also released in 2015 .
style
She Past Away's music is mostly attributed to post-punk , dark wave and gothic rock . Öztürkcan names the band's relationship to Gothic Rock and Dark Wave as "congruent to [the] thinking and feeling" of the musicians and does not see She Past Away as "innovators" who are inventing a new style. Rather, he sees the style presented as "a dying genre." Akbulut describes the music of She Past Away as "heavily influenced by the music of the 80s", making special reference to Cold Wave and the use of drum computers , which he believes is one of them connected cold monotonous attitude . However, there is no special group that you yourself emulate. However, the musicians admit in a later interview that the comparison with The Sisters of Mercy is obvious and that Andrew Eldritch's project may have influenced the group, but groups like DAF and Grauzone can also be named as an influence.
According to Post-Punk.com, the band's music includes elements from The Cure , The Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division , combined with a new and fresh sound element. On Gothic.at, the Turkish singing "held in the lowest possible pitch" is highlighted as the group's "very own note". On Post-Punk.com, Elvis Presley's vocals are used as a comparison for Caner's voice . In addition, there is reference to the use of delay and reverb effects to alienate the singing.
