Mr. Blue Sky is a song by the British rock band Electric Light Orchestra from the 1977album Out of the Blue. The song is the fourth track in the Concerto for a Rainy Day Suite on the third page of the original double LP. The piece ends with Jeff Lynne asking"Turn me around". The song was the fourth Hot 100 Top 40 song on the album, which was released in November 1977. The single reached number 6 on the UK charts and number 35 in the United States. It was also issued as a special edition on blue vinyl.

Emergence

The song was written by Jeff Lynne in Switzerland . The inspiration comes from a brief moment of good weather after a long period of rain. The song was voted "Anthem of the Midlands" ahead of songs like Come on Eileen and Stairway to Heaven and is used before every home game for Birmingham City FC in honor of Jeff Lynne and his lifelong support and friendship with former soccer player Trevor Francis played.

Cover versions

The song was by Tony Visconti , Kristeen Young and Richard Barone for Lynne Me Your Ears , a tribute to Jeff Lynne, gecovert . The group The Delgados released the song on The Complete BBC Peel Sessions . Lily Allen recorded the song for SFR , a French cell phone provider. The group The Decemberist covered the song at various concerts. Soul artist Mayer Hawthorne also covers it regularly at his concerts and has released a live recording on a cover EP.

Trivia

  • Mr. Blue Sky is also the title of the BBC documentary " The Story of Jeff Lynne & ELO ", which is included on the BlurayDisk " Live in Hyde Park ".
  • In the 2017 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe , this song runs during the opening credits, to which the character Groot dances while the other Guardians try to slay a space beast.
