Life

Hawthorne grew up in the university town of Ann Arbor and later moved to Los Angeles . There, the music producer Chris Manak ( Peanut Butter Wolf ) noticed him and signed him to his label Stones Throw Records . Hawthorne originally appeared as a hip-hop producer; He had produced soul music more for fun: “ It is an expensive and annoying procedure to have to get permission to use a sample. I wanted to see if I could play the sounds I need myself. "

The multi-instrumentalist composes, produces, sings and plays his songs completely on his own. Hawthorne's arrangements and his falsetto singing are reminiscent of the golden Motown era of the 1960s and 1970s, of soul legends such as Curtis Mayfield , Smokey Robinson , Isaac Hayes or Barry White . However, Hawthorne himself says: “ My sound is obviously influenced by Curtis Mayfield like the classic Motown sound, but I just grew up in the eighties, working as a DJ and hip-hop producer, so I was somebody else's music , take on a fresher point of view than a musician from the sixties. "

Snoop Dogg is said to have named Hawthorne one of his favorite musicians.

Hawthorne's debut album, A Strange Arrangement , was released in 2009 and received great critical acclaim. At the beginning of 2011, Hawthorne announced his move to the record company Universal Republic Records , where he released his second self-produced studio album How Do You Do , which was released in Germany on October 4, 2011.

In 2015 he released a joint album with producer Jake One under the band name Tuxedo .
