Republic Records is an American record label based in New York City that has been part of the Universal Music Group since 2000 . It was founded in 1994 by the brothers Monte and Avery Lipman as an independent label . In 2006 it was renamed Universal Republic Records , which was reversed in 2012.

In the early stages, Republic Records distributed the music of rock bands like the Bloodhound Gang and Chumbawamba . After their records enjoyed great popularity and they quickly achieved their first successes, an official contract for several years with Universal Music followed. The founding brothers Monte and Avery Lipman then received high management positions in both companies. In 2017 the founding of the film production company Federal Films was announced. The subsidiary is especially responsible for filming concert recordings and tour documentaries . With the concert documentary Chasing Happiness about the Jonas Brothers , the first production was released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in June 2019 .

Today the label represents artists from many different genres of music , not least because it has entered into several joint ventures with other labels, especially independent labels, in the past . For example, Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment and the hip-hop label Cash Money Records belong to Republic Records. The contract also includes: a. James Bay , Lorde , Twice , Ariana Grande , James Blake , Kid Cudi , Zendaya , Post Malone , Pearl Jam , Greta Van Fleet , Taylor Swift , Hailee Steinfeld , John Mellencamp , Black Sabbath , Metro Boomin and Liam Payne .
