history

Foundation and Black Smoke Rising

Singer Joshua Kiszka

The band was founded in 2012 by the brothers Joshua, Jacob and Samuel Kiszka ( vocals , guitar and bass ) and the drummer Kyle Hauck. Jacob Kiszka was still in high school at the time and initially jammed with Kyle Hauck. Jacob's twin brother Joshua and younger brother Samuel Kiszka were later added. The band name comes from a resident of Frankenmuth named Gretna Van Fleet. Since she is also a musician, she got calls all the time asking if she would give a concert that evening. Gretna Van Fleet later attended a concert by the band and allowed the musicians to use their slightly modified name as the band name. In October 2013 Kyle Hauck left the band for lack of time and was replaced by Jacob Kiszka's school friend Daniel Wagner.

A year later the band released the live EP Greta Van Fleet: Live in Detroit . The car manufacturer Chevrolet used the song Standing On in its advertisement for the Equinox model . In January 2016, the US TV station Showtime used the song Highway Tune in its Shameless series . The band was signed by Lava Records , a subsidiary of Universal Music Group , and released their debut EP Black Smoke Rising on April 21, 2017 , which was produced by Al Sutton and Marlon Young and reached number 182 on the US album charts . The streaming service Apple Music also named Greta Van Fleet as the new artist of the week, before the band went on tour with the band The Struts . The single Highway Tune reached number one on the Billboard mainstream rock charts.

From the Fires

Guitarist Jacob Kiszka

In October 2017, the band was named Best New Band at the Loudwire Music Awards , before the second EP From the Fires was released on November 10, 2017 . From the Fires was released as a double EP and was again produced by Al Sutton and Marlon Young. In addition to the four tracks from the first EP, From the Fires contains two new original compositions as well as cover versions of the songs A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke and Meet on the Ledge by Fairport Convention . The EP reached number 36 in the US, number 23 in the Canadian and number 84 in the German album charts. Also in autumn 2017 the band played at the Aftershock and Louder Than Life festivals .

In January 2018, the band began recording their debut album, which was produced by Al Sutton, Marlon Young and Herschel Boone. On January 24, 2018, Spotify released the exclusively digitally published single Spotify Singles entitled Black Smoke Rising and a cover version of Adele's Rolling in the Deep . Greta Van Fleet played at Elton John's charity gala on March 4th, 2018 for the benefit of his AIDS foundation. At the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards , Greta Van Fleet was nominated in the Best New Rock / Alternative Rock Artist category, but the award went to Judah & the Lion . Festival appearances in North America followed, including at Rock on the Range , the Carolina Rebellion and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival . In the summer the band played their first concerts in Europe and appeared in the opening act for Guns n 'Roses as well as at festivals such as Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , Pinkpop and the Download Festival .

Anthem of the Peaceful Army

Bass player Samuel Kiszka

The debut album Anthem of the Peaceful Army was released on October 19, 2018 and entered the German and US album charts at number three. In the US, 87,000 equivalent units of the album were sold. Of this, 80,000 were traditional album sales. If you only look at the latter, Anthem of the Peaceful Army was the best-selling album of the week. The album also reached number six in Switzerland and number ninth in Austria. On January 19, 2019, the band appeared in the NBC telecast Saturday Night Live and played the songs Black Smoke Rising and You're the One .

Greta Van Fleet were recognized in the Grammy Awards 2019 for the EP From the Fires in the category Best Rock Album . In addition, the band received nominations in the categories Best New Artist , Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song , but the prizes went to Dua Lipa , Chris Cornell and St. Vincent, respectively . At the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2019, the song Safari Song was recognized in the Rock Song of the Year category. The band was also nominated for Rock Artist of the Year , but the award went to Three Days Grace . At the Pollstar Awards 2019, Greta Van Fleet won in the Best New Headliner category .

The tours through Australia and Europe planned for February and March 2019 had to be postponed because singer Josh Kiszka fell ill with a respiratory infection . The European tour was to be rescheduled in autumn 2019. Meanwhile, Anthem of the Peaceful Army was awarded the Polish Fryderyk Music Prize as the best foreign album. With the Kerrang! Awards 2019 Anthem of the Peaceful Army was nominated in the category Best Album . However, the award went to the band Ghost . At the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2020, Greta Van Fleet were nominated in the Rock Artist of the Year category.

style

Drummer Daniel Wagner

Greta Van Fleet are usually compared to Led Zeppelin . The band themselves made it clear in an interview with the Dutch magazine FaceCulture that Led Zeppelin would not have any overriding influence on the band and also had no influence on their songwriting. Josh Kiszka stated that he didn't even know who Led Zeppelin was until high school. According to Jacob Kiszka, all four band members were heavily influenced by the blues and the so-called British Invasion . The main influences include Muddy Waters , Howlin 'Wolf , Buddy Guy or Elmore James , Cream , Jefferson Airplane , The Doors , Wilson Pickett , Joe Cocker or Sam & Dave .

At previous concerts, the band played not only their own material but also many cover versions of the blues and bands such as Cream or Bad Company . Contemporary bands hardly play a role in the band. Exceptions would be the Fleet Foxes , First Aid Kit , Rival Sons or The Black Keys . Guitarist Jake Kiszka counts Elmore James , Duane Allman , Pete Townshend , Jimmy Page , Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix among his role models. For more folk-heavy songs, he is based on the picking by John Denver .

On the part of the media, the parallels between the band and Led Zeppelin are assessed differently. Thomas Erlewine from the online magazine Allmusic described Greta Van Fleet as "Millennials who worship Led Zeppelin ". His colleague James Christoph Monger also drew comparisons to Kingdom Come . For Frank Thießies from the German magazine Metal Hammer it would be "easy to punish the debut album as copyist's stuff". Greta Van Fleet would "effortlessly manage to fuse blues, (hard) rock and folk". Juliane Kehr of the German magazine Visions wrote that Greta Van Fleet “don't plagiarize her musical heroes of the 60s and 70s , but study them, dissect them and let them become part of their own musical DNA”. Jeremy D. Larson from the online magazine Pitchfork Media, on the other hand, described the debut album as a "half- baked boomer fetish " and "49-minute, endless boring". Each song could also have been written or played by "one of the thousand other classic rock cover bands ." Musician and producer Steven Wilson was also very negative about the band, saying it was “a hell of a joke”, playing “like a poor third-rate Led Zeppelin imitation” and “don't think a minute will change in ten years anyone will remember her ”.
