Safari Song is a song by the American classic rock band Greta Van Fleet . It was the second single from the debut EP Black Smoke Rising .

Emergence

The song was born when the band in Plymouth Rock , an old church in the US state of Michigan in a recording studio was rebuilt, jammed . The musicians played some old blues songs and guitarist Jake Kiszka suddenly had the idea for the basic riff . For the bassist Sam Kiszka this riff had a certain complexity, a mixture of jungle music and blues, which reminded him of a safari . This is also the derivation of the title. Like many classic blues songs, the text was written as a narrative . The original version of the song, according to Sam Kiszka, was far more complex with more percussion and guitars. The musicians oversimplified the composition and then gave up an extensive percussion - Interlude .

The Safari song appeared on both the EP Black Smoke Rising , released on April 21, 2017, and the EP From the Fires , released on November 10, 2017. On October 31, 2017 Greta Van Fleet played the song at the NBC telecast Last Call with Carson Daly .

reception

According to James Geiser from Anti Hero Magazine , hearing the song for the first time "takes you back to a time when music was so powerful that the listener got goose bumps ". Sophia Moak from Nashville radio station WRVU compared the song to Led Zeppenlin's Good Times Bad Times with only small variations.

The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart and number two on the Canadian rock chart. Music Canada awarded the song a gold record . At the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2019, the song Safari Song was recognized in the Rock Song of the Year category.
