Anthem of the Peaceful Army -

Anthem of the Peaceful Army is the debut album of American classic rock - band Greta Van Fleet . The album was released on October 19, 2018 via Lava Records .

Emergence

Greta Van Fleet have been on tour almost continuously since spring 2017. For the debut album, the band actually wanted to fall back on three to five year old song ideas, rearrange them and record them for the first time. However, this plan was quickly rejected by the musicians. According to Sam Kiszka, the band preferred to “keep the old songs in memory as they are”. Instead, three-quarters of the tracks on the album were created from studio jam sessions . For the opening riff of Brave New World , guitarist Jake Kiszka experimented for hours before he was satisfied. One of the older songs that were used for the album was Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer) , which had been heavily revised, changed and shortened in the studio. According to Jake Kiszka, the musicians would have “just flown to the ideas” during this phase. In addition, the songs would cover a wider range than previous titles.

Was produced Anthem of the Peaceful Army collectively as Al Sutton, Marlon Young and Herschel Boone, The Rust Brothers known. Sutton and Young had already produced the two EPs Black Smoke Rising and From the Fires . The recordings took place at Blackbird Studios in Nashville and at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak . The entire recordings only took two weeks, whereby a four-week studio stay had actually been estimated. For the quasi-theme song Anthem , Jake Kiszka used a lap steel guitar . For the song Watching Over he used a modified guitar that sounds like a sitar . Sam Kiszka plays a Hammond organ on the song You're the One . During the recording, the band was visited by actor Tom Hanks , whose wife Rita Wilson recorded an album in the side studio at the same time.

"He said:" Great shit! I like this stuff! ”We sat flattened and just thought: Wow! That's the best part of it all. "

- Jake Kiszka

Al Sutton and Marlon Young mixed the album while Ryan Smith did the mastering . Tanner Peters and Jason Mott worked as sound engineers . The album cover was designed by the artists Kyledidthis and Ashley Pawlak.

The digital version of the album also contains the song Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer) as a bonus track . For the song When The Curtain Falls one were music video rotated. The album title means translated hymn of the peaceful army and according to Jake Kiszka is the title of a poem that Josh Kiszka wrote. The more concerts the band played, the more the musicians realized that the title refers to their audience, who come from different age groups and appreciate the band's music. According to a press release, it is a concept album that " reflects the idea of the cycle of life between life and death , beginning and end in lyrics on new beginnings, love , honesty , innocence , adventure, diversity and peace ".

“The album asks big questions. What are we doing to ourselves? What are we doing to our environment? What are we doing to each other? Why does there have to be hatred? And why must there be greed and evil? I think the album just asks why we can't all be one? We are all human. We look up to the same sky and breathe the same air. "

- Sam Kiszka

According to Jake Kiszka, the album should take the listener on a journey that lasts from the first to the last song. Nowadays, many people would only consume and buy individual songs. With the album, the band wants to "create something that gives the listener a cohesive experience".

Reviews

For Frank Thiessies from the German magazine Metal Hammer , Greta Van Fleet manages "effortlessly to fuse blues, (hard) rock and folk, to hit that intangible Tolkien tone and to build up a magical aura". It would be "easy to label the album as characterless copyist's stuff". Thiessies awarded six out of seven points. According to Jörg Staude from the German magazine Rock Hard , Greta Van Fleet "would be knee-deep in her seventies with her bell-bottoms and make Kingdom Come from the eighties look like blunt copyists". The "youngster would be another (and damn good) counter-example to Gene Simmons ' claim that rock is dead". Staude awarded eight out of ten points. The album was also praised in non-genre magazines. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung named Anthem of the Peaceful Army album of the week. Franziska Müller certified the band to have an "almost tantric mixture of rock , blues and soul " and that "their art of combining folk songwriting with the unrestrained force of rock is unique".

Thomas Smith from the New Musical Express was more critical , for whom little original happens on this album. The album would be " chased by the ghosts of Jimi Hendrix , Cream , AC / DC and most obviously Led Zeppelin ". Smith awarded three out of five stars. Jeremy D. Larson from the online magazine Pitchfork Media , who described the album as a “half- baked boomer fetish ” and “49-minute, endless boring”. Each song could also have been written or played by "one of the thousand other classic rock cover bands ." Larson awarded 1.6 out of ten points.
