Antonius Jozef Maria (Toine) Manders (born March 14, 1956 in Stiphout ) is a Dutch politician ( CDA , formerly 50PLUS and VVD ). He worked for VVD from 1999 to 2013, for 50PLUS from 2019 and has been a member of the European Parliament for CDA since June 2, 2020 .

Life

Manders studied industrial design in Tilburg and law in Maastricht and then worked as a lecturer and lawyer. In 1994 he was elected for the VVD in the municipal council of Asten and a year later in the provincial council of Noord-Brabant . He held both offices until 1999. Since then, Manders has been a member of the European Parliament . Here he wrote reports on a directive on environmental liability and on the prevention and remediation of environmental damage according to the “ polluter pays principle ”.

In October 2013 he left the VVD to run the 2014 European elections as list leader for 50plus. In his opinion, the VVD had moved too far to the right . However, 50PLUS narrowly missed entry into the European Parliament. For the 2019 European elections , Manders ran again as a top candidate and was able to move into the European Parliament . Since June 2, 2020 he has been a member of the European Parliament for the Christian Democratic CDA .
