history
The track Southern Nights is inspired by childhood memories. Allen Toussaint had visits from relatives from Louisiana , who, according to his stories, often spent the night in the open air and told each other stories. Toussaint wrote a song for it and first published it in 1975 on his album Southern Nights .
Jimmy Webb introduced Glen Campbell to the song, which changed the content a little and then released it as a single and on his album of the same name. Campbell's version was released on January 17, 1977 and became a number one hit on the pop , country and adult contemporary charts in the United States and Canada . The song also made it into the charts in Germany and Great Britain. The song was awarded a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America for selling one million singles . In addition, nominations for the Country Music Association for the song of the year followed .
