Jumper (English for "Springer") is a science fiction - thriller from director Doug Liman from the year 2008 . The script was written by David S. Goyer , Jim Uhls and Simon Kinberg based on the novel of the same name by Steven Gould .

action

For centuries there have been people who are able to instantly teleport to another place , the so-called jumpers. Almost no one knows about their existence, except for an equally old, secret organization, the Paladins . These have the goal of killing all jumpers because they do not want to allow individual people to have such abilities and the power associated with them.

15-year-old David Rice was abandoned by his mother when he was five and has lived with his father ever since. David is in love with his schoolmate Millie and gives her a snow globe . When handing over the gift, however, the school bully Mark Kobold interferes and throws the snow globe onto the ice cover of a frozen river. David fetches the snow globe, but breaks through the ice and is swept away by the current. Shortly before drowning, he suddenly finds himself on the floor of the school library, still wet and without knowing how he got there. In the evening he comes home, where his father follows him to his room and wants to confront him about the delay. Then it happens again that he teleports to the library.

David is widely believed to be dead. He then decides to leave his hometown like his mother. He leaves the snow globe in Millie's garden so she knows he's still alive. He starts a new life in New York. There he develops and trains his skills that allow him to gain access to any location. He teleports himself to the Empire State Building. Later, he got the idea to break into the vault of a bank and use the cash on hand. He leaves a note on which he promises to pay everything back later.

The years go by and David feels safe. He leads a carefree life as a jumper and teleports into areas that he previously only knew from postcards. With the money he has stolen, he can afford a dream apartment and many amenities.

Eight years after his first bank break-in, the paladin Roland turns up at David's house. Roland and his organization have been on his trail since David's first intrusion into the bank. Roland engages David in a fight and uses electric shocks to prevent David from jumping. But David narrowly escapes and flees to his hometown, where he visits his father. He later meets his childhood friend Millie, who works in a bar.

An unexpected reunion with Mark leads to an argument about Millie, which escalates into a fight. In the course of the fight David teleports himself with Mark into the vault of a bank and leaves him there, whereby Mark is held accountable for David's hitherto unexplained bank break-ins. Back at home, David and Millie get closer. David, who told Millie that he was now in the banking business, reminds Millie of her dreams. During her school days, she wanted to visit all countries in the world. He invites Millie to travel to Italy with him. They fly to Rome in the conventional way .

When the two of them visit the Colosseum after the ticket office closes in the evening , David meets the experienced jumper Griffin, who has been watching him for a long time to warn him. He informs David about the war with the paladins. Not only are they after the jumpers, they are often not afraid to get rid of their loved ones and everyone who is close to them. David and Griffin are attacked by two paladins in the Coliseum, but Griffin kills. Millie doesn't notice. She escapes with David, but they are arrested by the Italian police and questioned about the dead paladins that have since been found. David's missing mother unexpectedly appears at the police station, helps him to escape and disappears again immediately. David secretly leaves the police station with Millie and takes them to the airport to protect them from the paladins. He shows Millie the cash he's carrying, but doesn't tell her anything about how he got the money. Millie completely distrusts David after he has made it clear to her that she will have to fly back to the US alone.

In the meantime, the paladin pays Roland David's father a visit to his house. David later finds his father lying there unconscious on the floor, takes him to the hospital and seeks out Mark in prison. He told Roland everything about David and also about the jump together. David asks Griffin for his help in fighting Roland. Griffin prefers to fight alone, but agrees after initial hesitation. They miss Millie after they land at the airport, whereupon David comes to her apartment. A short time later, the paladins storm the house. David reveals his ability to Millie and teleports with her to Griffin's lair.

The paladins follow David to Griffin's hiding place with the help of a machine that is able to keep jumpscars - cracks in space that appear briefly after a jump - open. After a fierce battle in the desert and in Millie's apartment, Griffin can take the machine, but shortly before the rift closes, the paladins pull Millie back through the portal into her apartment.

Griffin wants to kill the paladins with a bomb. But since David fears for Millie's life, he tries to stop Griffin from doing his thing. A wild fight ensues between the two jumpers, and David manages to push Griffin into an overturned power line in Chechnya , blocking his powers. David teleports to Millie's apartment, where he is immediately pinned down by the paladins. Eventually he manages to break free by teleporting Millie's entire apartment into a river. By jumping again, he saves Millie and himself to the high school library, but Roland is teleported too. David takes him to a high cave on Horseshoe Bend and leaves him with the words "You could have ended up with the sharks".

Finally, David visits his mother during the winter months. She explains to him that she is a paladin herself and that she had left him as a child so as not to have to kill him. She then gives David a head start, and he leaves her house to jump into warmer climes with Millie.

Reviews

Daniel Kothenschulte wrote in the Frankfurter Rundschau on March 27, 2008 that the “primitiveness” of the stop trick used gave the film “its special charm” . Because of its "unbridled anarchy [...] the film is pointless, but because of that it is also unrestrained" .

film-dienst wrote that the “only initially imaginative action film” is only suitable for a young audience. He would lose himself “in his many changes of location and special effects” andtirehimselfcompletely at “his illogical end” .

TV Spielfilm judges that Doug Liman would pull out all the action, “ but it doesn't help: The story remains meaningless, low-tension and is dragged down by the chemistry-free romance between [David and Millie] [...]. "

cinema.de certainly sees the good idea, but considers it " implemented without imagination " and describes the film as a " lengthy and convulsive spectacle aimed at show values. “The only bright spot is Jamie Bell.

production

The company 20th Century Fox and Regency Enterprises gave the film in order, which was produced by New Regency Pictures, Hypnotic, Dune Entertainment, Epsilon Motion Pictures and Jumper Productions. 20th Century Fox owns theatrical distribution rights for North and South America as well as Japan, Singapore, Sweden and the Netherlands. The distribution company Kinowelt-Filmverleih owns the distribution rights for German cinemas. 20th Century Fox has ceded the distribution of DVDs and Blu-rays to the subsidiary Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment . Filming

The recordings were made from August 28 to December 8, 2006, and the film was further processed and produced in the film studios until January 12, 2007. The film was shot in New York City and borough Manhattan on the Empire State Building , in Ann Arbor ( Michigan ), Huron High School , New Port and in Prairieville ( Louisiana ). Part of the production originated in Europe , with the Colosseum in Rome ( Italy ) and the city of Paris in France serving as locations.

The filming in the Colosseum lasted three days and was only allowed to take place at limited times, as the tourist tours should not be disturbed. In addition, the crew was not allowed to place any equipment on the property and was only allowed to use sunlight to illuminate the recordings. Additional indoor and outdoor shots were taken in film studios. The Toronto Film Studios in Canada, the Fox Baja Studios in Baja California in Mexico and the Barrandov Film Studios in Prague served as production facilities.

occupation

Doug Liman was hired to direct the film in late 2005. A film trilogy was originally planned. Tom Sturridge was initially slated for the role of David Rice . In addition to Tom Sturridge as David , Teresa Palmer was confirmed for the role as Millie , but the two were re-cast by Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson two months after filming began due to high production costs. Eminem was supposed to play the leading role in the film, but the statement was revised by the director. The students and teenagers in and before high school were specially cast for the scenes.

Theatrical releases

The world premiere took place on February 6, 2008 in Rome, on February 11, the film premiered in New York and one day later the film was shown in the Philippines. Video game

A video game was created for the film under the name Jumper: Griffin's Story by Brash Entertainment . The game was released on February 12, 2008 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and Wii, but the critics described it as much too short and at the same time incredibly monotonous agony. Overall, it is one of the worst console games ever.

Trivia

  • 56-year-old set designer David Ritchie was killed in an accident while filming.
  • The character Roland Cox was named Brian in the original script, this was changed to avoid a reference to the actor Brian Cox . The name Roland would also appear more ancient and would better reflect a paladin.
  • Actors Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson got to know each other while filming, and they got engaged in December 2008.

continuation

Before the shooting revealed Doug Liman to have a jumper - Trilogy plan. Since the film was a success on the opening weekend, it was already clear a week after the premiere that there would be a sequel. Hayden Christensen announced in August 2010 that there are talks about a sequel. Although some of the main cast were reluctant to continue in April 2011, a sequel is still considered likely by numerous sources. An official announcement is still pending.
