The great power failure - a city in a state of emergency (alternative title: Trigger Effect - a city in a state of emergency ) is a 1996 produced thriller by David Koepp . The plot is based on the eponymous pilot episode of the BBC television series "Connections" by James Burke .

action

The married couple Matthew and Annie live in suburban Los Angeles with their young daughter . One evening they are harassed by two African Americans in the cinema , whereupon they change seats. The same night they returned home, power went out across Los Angeles . The next day, Matt wants to pick up the much-needed medication for his daughter, but since he has no prescription, the pharmacist turns him away. Since there is no further help in the hospital either, he decides to steal the medicine from the pharmacy.

Later in the day, the small family receives a visit from an old friend, Joe. Since the city has been looted since the power outage, they buy a shotgun to protect themselves. The following night they are surprised by a burglar who is caught and shot by their neighbor.

Finally, since there is no telling when the electricity will work again, it is decided to go to Annie's parents. When they take a break on the journey, they surprise a man who sleeps in his car, which is clearly broken down. The driver is now asking for a lift. But since Joe sees that he is armed, he takes the shotgun out of the car, but is then shot by the other man. He now steals her car and her provisions, but emphasizes that he really only wanted to go along.

Thereupon Matt sets out on foot to the next house, which is about an hour away. There he meets one of the two men from the cinema again and now suspects that this is not his house at all. He asks for the man's car, but at most he offers him food. Matthew then gets his shotgun and breaks into the house. But he is provided by the man and it turns out that it is actually the homeowner. They now drive together to Annie and Joe, who is then removed by the ambulance.
