Karl Gustav Adolf Thomas (born September 28, 1834 in Zittau , † January 16, 1887 in Dresden ) was a German landscape painter.

Life

Karl Gustav Adolf Thomas was the son of a master carpenter. From 1859 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Ludwig Richter .

In 1863 he was awarded a medal. Thanks to a scholarship received in 1864, he went on a study trip to Upper Bavaria and Tyrol . He then continued his studies in Munich with Adolf Lier and Friedrich Voltz .

Returning to Dresden he devoted himself to landscape painting. In the new theater in Dresden Thomas painted a landscape from Goethe's “ Götz von Berlichingen ” in the stairwell . Around 1873 he painted the picture cycle "Amor und Psyche", now in the Zittau City Museum. 1876/77 Design and execution of four lunettes in the Dresden court theater (side of the kennel: Nathan and Götz von Berlichingen , side of the Elbe: Iphigenie and Eurydice ).

In the period from 1866 to 1881 Thomas often visited the Brannenburg artists' colony .

In 1884 Thomas was appointed professor for landscape painting at the "Academy for Drawing, Painting and Modeling" founded by David Simonson in Dresden.
