Love and Marriage is a song by Sammy Cahn (lyrics) and Jimmy Van Heusen (music). It was popularized by Frank Sinatra's version of 1955 and as the title track of Eine terrible Nice Family (1987-1997).

background

The song was written by Sammy Chan, who wrote the lyrics, and composer Jimmy Van Heusen in 1955. Frank Sinatra sang the song for the first time in 1955 in Thornton Wilder's Our Little Town (director: Delbert Mann ), which was broadcast on NBC as part of the television series Producers' Showcase . Love and Marriage is also the title of the second act of the play. The opening words “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage” (“Love and wedding go together like a horse and its carriage load”) are to be understood in this sense. A comparison that fits the setting of the piece and the role of the wedding in western culture.

Three weeks later, the first version was released as a single , which reached number 5 on the US charts and number 3 on the UK charts.

Shortly thereafter, Dinah Shore released their version, which reached number 20 in the Most Played by Jockeys and number 47 in the Top 100. Bing Crosby's version was also released in the same year .

The first album version appeared in 1956 on the album This Is Sinatra! from Capitol Records .

At the Primetime Emmy Awards in 1956 , Chan and Van Heusen received an Emmy for “Best Contribution to Music”.

Further use

As the title track of the sitcom A Terrible Family from 1987 to 1997, the song achieved wider distribution. The rather cheesy song thwarted the content of the sitcom, which revolves around the destitute shoe seller Al Bundy and his rather hapless family life.
