Less Than Jake is a ska punk band from Gainesville , Florida formed in 1992 by Vinnie Fiorello, Chris Demakes and Roger Manganelli. The unusual name comes from the 80 pound bulldog that Fiorello's parents owned. The dog was so important to the parents that everything was "less than Jake" (Eng .: less / less important than Jake). Trombonist Buddy Schaub played for a while in the band Goldfinger and the former bassist Shaun Grief now works as a roadie .

For the sake of the candy PEZ and the figures that go with it, their first real album Pezcore was released in 1995 under the label Asian Man Records. After the album's success, they were signed to Capitol Records . The albums Losing Streak and Hello Rockview are among the best ska-punk albums according to fans and critics. Since the band felt badly treated, they switched to Fat Mike's independent label Fat Wreck Chords . Borders & Boundaries was released in 2000 and was a great success. For the song All My Best Friends Are Metalheads contained on the album Hello Rockview , a video was produced that parodies Heavy Metal Parking Lot .

After only one record on Fat Wreck, they switched back to a major with Sire Records, where Anthem appeared in 2003 and, three years later, In With The Out Crowd . On this record they also experimented a little with their sound, which was not accepted by most of the fans. Mark Hoppus of the band blink-182 wrote the song "The Rest of my Life" for Less Than Jake.

In April 2006 Less Than Jake performed together with the Dropkick Murphys in different places in Europe such as Berlin , Hamburg , Bielefeld , Cologne , Saarbrücken (without Dropkick Murphys), Munich , Meerhout ( Groezrock ) and Vienna .

In summer 2007 the band played various festivals such as the Greenfield Festival in Interlaken, the Mach1 Festival in Montabaur and the Southside Festival in Neuhausen ob Eck. They then set out on their new record GNV FLA (a tribute to their hometown of Gainesville, Florida), which was released in June 2008 on the band's own label Sleep it Off Records. Musically they went back to their roots. They also appeared in 2008 at Area4 , Highfield and as the opening act for the "Jäzzfest" organized by doctors overseas.

In summer 2017 they performed at the Chiemsee Summer Festival in Übersee am Chiemsee and in 2019 at the Stemweder Open Air .
