Benny Spellman
Benny Spellman (actually Benjamin J. Spellman * 11. December 1931 in Pensacola (Florida) , † 3. June 2011 ) was an American R & B - singer .
biography
Spellman was best known for his hit Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette) and the accompanying B-side, the original version of the song Fortune Teller , which was later covered by the Rolling Stones . Both songs were written by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym Naomi Neville. Lipstick Traces reached number 28 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Spellman also worked with Huey "Piano" Smith and was the accompanist on Ernie K-Doe's number one hit, Mother-in-Law . In 1965 he recorded the single I Feel Good / Word Game for Atlantic Records ; after that he largely withdrew from the music business and worked in the beer industry.
Benny Spellman was still active as a talent promoter in Louisiana. In August 1988 he performed at a party for George HW Bush . In the same year, Collectables Records released a retrospective of 16 Spellman recordings from the 1960s. He has also performed regularly at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival . In 2009 he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and honored with a memorial stone on the Tipitina's Walk of Fame. After suffering a stroke, he moved to Florida in the mid-1990s. His daughter Judy Spellman is a gospel and jazz singer .
Spellmann died on June 3, 2011 in Pensacola of respiratory failure .
