The Chimes were a doo-wop quintet from Los Angeles , California who, in addition to their studio work for Specialty Records, also released two singles under their own names.

history

In August 1955, the Chimes from South Central Los Angeles signed a contract with Specialty Records under band leader Horace "Pookie" Wooton. In September they released their first single, Zindy Lou and Tears on My Pillow , the A-side of which hit the local charts in Los Angeles and Philadelphia with influences of African rhythms and hypnotic singing , but with no nationwide reactions. On September 1, the band had already accompanied Tony Allen as a quartet with Wooton, Jackson, Cobbs and Talbert on his successful recording Night Owl . Although they were called "The Champs" on this record, they were properly named Especially on Allen's follow-up single . Check Yourself, Baby was improvised on the back of Especially in the studio on an idea from Charles Jackson . The collaboration as a session musician with Allen was abruptly terminated by his breach of contract with Specialty. The band then released again in April 1956 under their own names Pretty Little Girl and Chop Chop . It wasn't until 1980 that Relic Records released its title The Chimes Ring out on a compilation called The Best of Specialty Records .

The Chimes record career ended in 1956, but the connection to Tony Allen was maintained: Horace Wooton and Danny Cobb supported him again and again as "The Wonders" and "The Wanderers" on various releases. Wooton eventually became the lead singer of The El Reys and also worked for the Tangents .
