Honey Boy is a 2019 American drama film directed by Alma Har'el. The biography tells of the childhood and adolescence of actor Shia LaBeouf , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Lucas Hedges plays Shia LaBeouf's alter ego Otis Lort in the film, LaBeouf himself embodies the father of the main character in the film, so LaBeouf basically plays his own father. The film premiered on January 25, 2019 at the Sundance Film Festival and was released in US theaters on November 8, 2019. The German premiere took place on November 25, 2019 at the Around the World in 14 Films Festival in Berlin.

action

22-year-old actor Otis Lort is currently on the set of a big budget action film. He's startled by an explosion, even if it's just a special effect. This reminds Otis very much of a situation when, as a 12-year-old, he stood in front of the camera for the filming of a television program and was thrown a cake at him.

At the time, Otis lived with his father in a shabby apartment complex that looked like a motel. His father James, a former clown and heroin addict, is now dependent on the money his son makes. A neighbor of theirs becomes his best friend and is his soul mate despite her age difference. In Tom, who works for the US State Department, Otis later finds something like a big brother.

Years later, Otis finds himself in a facility where he explains to the doctor that he has post-traumatic stress disorder.

production

Lucas Hedges plays Shia LaBeouf's alter ego Otis Lort in the film

Directed by Alma Har'el . The actor Shia LaBeouf , who wrote the screenplay for the film, had it based on his own life. The title Honey Boy comes from his childhood nickname. Although the story is based on LaBoeuf's life, the characters have different names. This is the name of the protagonist Otis Lort, a name that LaBoeuf had previously used as a pseudonym while working on the script. LaBeouf wrote the script while on rehab. Originally he was supposed to work through his childhood in an exercise in writing. The artist turned his thoughts into a script, which is the basis of Honey Boy.

While LaBeouf plays his own father, Lucas Hedges plays him during the time when he celebrated his breakthrough with the Disney Channel series Eben ein Stevens . The young actor Noah Jupe embodied him in his childhood.

The score is composed by Alex Somers . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 26 pieces of music, was released by KRONK as a download on November 8, 2019.

The film was shown for the first time on January 25, 2019 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . There, Amazon Studios secured the rights to the film for $ 5 million. The trailer was presented in August 2019. In September 2019, the film was shown as part of the Special Presentations at the Toronto International Film Festival , in October 2019 it was screened in competition at the London Film Festival , and it was released in US cinemas on November 8, 2019. Since the film had already been selected for the 55th edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival , but it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, screenings took place in early July 2020 as part of the “KVIFF at Your Cinema” initiative, where it was one of 16 Films was shown for nine days in various cinemas in the Czech Republic.

Reviews and grossing results

The film received so far 94 percent of all critics at Rotten Tomatoes a rather positive rating of an average of 7.7 of the possible 10 points.

TheWrap's Sam Fragoso explains Honey Boy shines particularly brightly when the script focuses on Otis and his father. These interactions are often characterized by violence, but at the same time they also show that James is masking the deep-seated insecurities surrounding his failure as a father. James wants to share in his son's success, but fears that this could stop the rise of Otis. Fragoso describes Honey Boy as a cinematic reconciliation as LaBeouf grapples with a childhood that he cannot escape. The impossibility of erasing them may have forced him to write it down, but the film feels less like a confessional and more like an exorcism, and the film doesn't rationalize LaBeouf's decisions. Regarding the director's work, Fragoso says that telling the life story of another person, especially when told with such brutal honesty, is impressive, and to do so with warmth, intellect and vulnerability is a Herculean achievement.

Jon Frosch of The Hollywood Reporter calls the film a sensitive, sincere portrait of the dysfunctional upbringing of a child actor. However personal a project like Honey Boy may be, it would only refresh themes and characters familiar from other problem parenting films recently, such as We the Animals , The Florida Project and I, Tonya . Apart from a comparison with these, Honey Boy is in many ways an impressive, vividly realized work. About the father character in the film, Frosch says the alcoholic and war veteran is both jealous of his child's success and tormented by the fact that he is dependent on it. The film turns James into a wreck full of self-hatred, insecurity and neediness, at the same time one feels pity for him.

The film grossed $ 3.1 million worldwide.
