The Florida Project is an American drama directed by Sean Baker , which celebrated its world premiere on May 22, 2017 as part of the Cannes Film Festival 2017 in the side series Quinzaine des réalisateurs and was released in selected US cinemas on October 6, 2017.

action

Little Moonee lives with her mother Halley in "Magic Castle", one of the many cheap motels in Kissimmee , not far from the world-famous Walt Disney World Resort . The heavily tattooed Halley is unemployed and lives with her daughter on the poverty line. She tries to be a good mother to her daughter. In order to be able to continue paying their rent, they are dependent on alms from a church organization and more or less illegal business - such as selling cheap perfume and stolen wristbands at the Disney Resort. Occasionally they also go to a hotel and eat from the buffet there. Halley's friend Ashley, who works in a diner, also provides them with food.

Mother and daughter often come into conflict with Bobby, the manager of the "Magic Castle", but who has sympathy for Moonee and her mother. Full of compassion, Bobby tries to save the mother-daughter duo from the worst, but also has to remind them again and again to pay their rent on time.

Moonee's life is nevertheless full of optimism and wonderful experiences. Like her buddies Scooty, Dicky and Jancey, who just moved into the motel next door with her grandmother, she is simply too young to realize that they are living below the poverty line. Because the Magic Kingdom in Disney World is inaccessible to the children, although only a few meters away, they create their own magic kingdom. Bobby manages to protect the children who are rarely guarded by their parents during the games - for example from a suspected pedophile who enters the property - as well as to teach them about wrongdoing. Moonee's friend Dicky moves to New Orleans with his father . When the children burn down an empty, shabby holiday home in their game, Scooty's mother Ashley forbids her son to have any further contact with Moonee.

As money becomes scarce, Halley begins to advertise himself as a prostitute on the Internet. She hides her daughter Moonee in the bathroom to loud music during her clients' visits. After she stole from a client and he threatens the police, Bobby protects her from the consequences, but announces that she will be kicked out if she should continue to prostitute herself. Halley sees no other way out than to ask Ashley for money, but is confronted by Ashley with knowledge of prostitution and provoked. Halley then loses control and blindly beats Ashley.

After a call, apparently from Ashley, the youth welfare office is at the door the next day. Halley tidies up the apartment and gives her drugs to a friend, but the youth welfare office has already decided to move Moonee to a foster family for the time being. Moonee flees from youth welfare officers to her best friend Jancey. Together they enter the Walt Disney Resort and stand in the Magic Kingdom .

production

Film title and staff

The title of the film refers to the name of Disney World during the planning phase of the theme park. After the success of Disneyland in Southern California, Walt Disney planned to build a similar theme park in central Florida. Mid-1960s, the project was simply called Project X known. Over a period of 18 months, 27,440 hectares of land had been acquired, almost twice the size of Manhattan. At a press conference on November 12, 1965, Walt Disney, his brother Roy Disney, and Florida Governor Haydon Burns officially presented their Florida Project . Disney World in Orlando finally opened on October 1, 1971.

Sean Baker directed and wrote the script

Directed by Sean Baker , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. As in his last film Tangerine LA , Baker relies on the contrast between American dream worlds and the immediate reality of the street in The Florida Project , according to Jan Künemund from Spiegel Online . In his film, Baker lets Moonee and her mother live in a motel near Disney World in Florida and calls this living environment the "invisible underclass" of the USA, which is often underrepresented in the cinemas there. Baker tells the story almost consistently from the perspective of the girl Moonee, a six-year-old to whom the meager circumstances of her life seem less dramatic and whose awareness of existence on the edge of the subsistence level is barely pronounced. In his film, Baker strings together scenes from a lifetime without imposing a dramaturgical structure on them. He moves in the delimited cosmos of a motel, whose residents are among the socially weak. Baker resisted the temptation to pathetically exaggerate the tragic aspects of the story and bring the viewer the problems and conflicts of the observed milieu in a cautious manner and with unobtrusive humanity, says Michael Meyns from Filmstarts . The director has clearly researched carefully and shows a lot of feeling for the peculiarities of this world on the edge of society, so Meyns.

Baker said he did not know that many people in the United States are without permanent residence. It was only his co-screenwriter Chris Bergoch who drew his attention to this and showed him an article about families who live with their children in motels just outside the Magic Kingdom: "For someone who cannot afford to live, a motel or hotel can be the last refuge before you end up on the street or in a home. ”The connection to the Disney dream world not only makes the place seem downright unreal, but what makes the whole thing even more ironic, according to Baker, is the fact that it Motels were once built for tourists who visit Disneyworld: “You orientated yourself to its style, so it was a parasite. They have names like Enchanted Inn or Magic Castle . "Baker said in the Tagesspiegel , but the biggest influence had the slapstick series Die kleine Trolche , which was filmed at the time of the Great Depression :" My focus is on the chaos and the humor of the kids . "

Cast and dubbing

As for his film Tangerine LA, Baker also cast for The Florida Project, in addition to well-known and again unknown actors such as the young Brooklynn Prince , who played the lead role of little Moonee in the film. The child actress Valeria Cotto plays her friend Jancey. Christopher Rivera , who plays her boyfriend Scooty, even had no acting experience, as did Bria Vinaite , who plays Moonee's mother Halley in the film and was found on social media. By far the most famous actor in the film is Willem Dafoe , who took on the role of motel manager Bobby. The fact that Baker mainly works with amateur actors reinforces the impression of absolute authenticity, says Michael Meyns, but Dafoe also fits in ideally with the ensemble, whose outsider figure serves as a kind of moral compass and who looks at Moonee and Halley with compassion tries to save the mother-daughter duo from the worst.

The German synchronization was carried out on behalf of DMT - Digital Media Technologie GmbH, Hamburg. Hanns Jörg Krumpholz lends his voice to the hotel manager Bobby in the German version.

Filming and publishing

Moonee, Jancey and Scooty can see Cinderella's castle in the Magic Kingdom of Disney World in Orlando , near which the film was shot

The film was shot in the summer of 2016 in accordance with its title in Osceola County and in Orlando in the area around Disney World in Florida and thus also its location. Baker said, “It's always important to me that the setting itself is a character. The Motel Magic Castle came with this wonderful production value, it was purple because it had only recently been repainted. ”The film was shot in 35mm .

Commenting on the location, Baker said, “My film was tied to this location from the start, even though there are cheap motels like this all over the US. It was crucial for us that the motel is in the immediate vicinity of Disney World, this contrast motivates the film. We wrote the story later. "Andreas Busche from Tagesspiegel says that Baker's film is sparkling with life and the colors pop, as in the Tangerine LA shot on an iPhone , which immortalized the Californian magic hour, the sunset, in the cinema:" The The beauty of these lifeworlds lies in the pictures themselves, the director and his cameraman Alexis Zabe , who has already worked with Carlos Reygadas , do not force it on them. "Baker said:" We wanted poetry, not magical realism. "

The film is told from the children's perspective, which is why the camera was aimed at the children's viewing horizon during the filming, says the director: “We also filmed them from below, slightly offset, to make them appear more powerful. They should feel really big. ”His cameraman Alexis Zabé had the great ability to intensify the pastel colors that were already there:“ With children, one can imagine, the senses are sharpened and more receptive. Tones are louder, colors stronger, tastes stronger. They absorb their environment - and sometimes they don't. ”With regard to working with the children during the recording, Baker said that they only had a limited amount of time with them, at most six hours a day, otherwise this would have been child labor according to the law. The shooting took place while the hotel was running in an environment that could only be controlled to a limited extent, according to Baker, and the final scene, which is the only one set directly in Disney World, was secretly shot with the iPhone.

The distribution rights for the film are owned by A24 . The Florida Project celebrated its world premiere on May 22, 2017 as part of the Cannes Film Festival 2017 in the side series Quinzaine des réalisateurs and was screened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival from September 9, 2017 . A first trailer for the film was presented in August 2017. A screening of the film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival is planned for September 2017 . The film was shown at the Zurich Film Festival in late September and early October 2017 . In October 2017 the film was shown at the London Film Festival and the Hamburg Film Festival , where it was nominated for the Art Cinema Award and received the Critics' Prize. The film was released in select US theaters on October 6, 2017 and in UK theaters on November 10, 2017. A theatrical release in Germany took place on March 15, 2018.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for approval states: “The film depicts childhood, poverty and parental love in a realistic, believable setting. The narrative perspective changes between mother and daughter, who, like those around them, are depicted as loving and caring despite all hardship. Individual depictions of conflicts, emotional injuries, drug use and other crimes can irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12, but as early as 12 year olds are able to relate these aspects to the characters in the film and the context of the story and to distance themselves emotionally. For them, the themes and images in the film pose a challenge, but they don't overwhelm them. "

Reviews and grossing results

The film has so far won over 96 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.8 out of a possible 10 points. The consensus it says: " The Florida Project grants a colorful look at an underrepresented segment of the population who proves to be captivating as it raises sobering questions about modern America." The film went to the 2017 Golden Tomato Awards as runner-up in the Best Film Drama category .

Eric Kohn of IndieWire says the film will cement the status of Sean Baker as one of the most innovative American directors, who often tells stories in his films that the country usually does not see.

The Guardian's Jordan Hoffman says the film digs its nails into the everyday struggles of poor people in America. That all of this takes place in the shadow of the Magic Kingdom, according to Hoffman, is a metaphor, and there is also a lot of joyful noise in this film. Moonee imitates what she sees and hears, and much of it comes from television, so her uncontrolled rudeness is not the result of malice, Hoffman said. It makes little sense to discipline her because she is a force of nature and just damn cute. Overall, Hoffman particularly emphasizes the acting performances of the child actors in his criticism.

In the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Lukas Stern highlighted Willem Dafoe's role of caretaker Bobby, who, like a zipper puller, holds the film together as well as the whole world shown in it, which would otherwise fall apart.

The film has received nearly $ 11.3 million in revenue from screenings to date. With the film budget of around two million euros, that meant a financial success.

Use in school lessons

In March 2018 the film was presented by kinofenster.de as "Film of the Month". The online portal also offers materials on the film for use in lessons. There Sarina Lacaf explains that numerous scenes in the film are snapshots that primarily served to create the magic of the children's world in this way. Tension arises from their bitter discrepancy to reality: “The subtext of the film increasingly indicates that harsh reality will catch up with the protagonists. When the youth welfare office finally intervenes and threatens to separate Halley and Moonee, The Florida Project reaches a brilliant and ambiguous finale. ”In spring 2019, the film was presented as part of the SchulKinoWoche in North Rhine-Westphalia.
