The porn actress Jane lives in Los Angeles in a shared apartment with her colleague Melissa and her friend Mikey. One day, at a yard sale , she buys a thermos from the elderly Sadie , in which she later finds $ 10,000 . After an extensive shopping tour, Jane feels guilty and tries to befriend Sadie, which succeeds after initial difficulties. Sadie tells Jane that she is the widow of a professional gamer who left her a small fortune.

One day when Jane has to go to an adult fair , she asks Sadie to take care of her Chihuahua starlet . After Sadie the dog ran away and she had great problems finding him again, she decides to break off the relationship with Jane. But she is not satisfied with that and buys two plane tickets to Paris , a city that Sadie loves, although she has never been there.

Melissa, who in the meantime had found the money in Jane's room and suspects where it comes from, is angry that Jane is not spending it on her, but on Sadie. She drives to Sadie, tells her what the money is all about, and that Jane only seeks contact with Sadie out of pity . Nevertheless, Sadie decides to fly to Paris with Jane. Before that, both of them drive to the grave of Sadie's late husband and Jane learns that she also had a daughter who died early.

Starlet was filmed in the San Fernando Valley in Van Nuys and Chatsworth . It premiered on March 11, 2012 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . In the United States, the film was on 9 November 2012 in the cinemas in Germany on May 9, 2013.

According to the Rotten Tomatoes film website , 88 percent of the 43 film reviews examined left a positive verdict.

“The film accompanies the developing mother-daughter relationship in the aimlessly wandering mode that does not aim at any dramaturgical escalation, which also shapes the daily routine of the protagonists. Without scandalizing the craft of its character, but rather calmly, the film explores life in the sun-drenched, but completely unglamorous 'Porn Valley'. "
