Sean Baker (director)
Sean Baker (born February 26, 1971 in Summit , New Jersey) is an American screenwriter , film director and film producer .
Life
Sean Baker was born in 1971 in Summit , New Jersey, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in film studies from New York University .
His first feature film that he directed and also wrote the screenplay was Four Letter Words , in which he explored the attitudes and language of young American men. He then shot Take Out with Shih-Ching Tsou , in which they show an illegal Chinese immigrant who can no longer raise the payments for his smuggling. His third feature film Prince of Broadway premiered at the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival. Baker presented his fourth feature film Starlet with Dree Hemingway and Besedka Johnson in the lead roles at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2012. Baker shot his fifth film Tangerine LA with James Ransone , complete with an iPhone 5S, and presented it at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival . At the Cannes Film Festival 2017 , Baker presented his film The Florida Project as part of Directors Fortnight , which was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017 . As part of the Hamburg Film Festival , Baker was awarded the Critics' Prize for this film.
In late June 2018, Baker became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
