Around the World in 14 Films is an independent film festival that takes place annually in Berlin . For ten days, the festival presents outstanding works from current world cinema. Prominent sponsors and international guests present and discuss the films.

history

The film festival was founded in 2005 by Bernhard Karl, Nikola Mirza and Kathrin Bessert and took place for the first time in 2006. Bernhard Karl is responsible for the concept, the management and the program. Susanne Bieger has been in charge of the organization and guest management since 2011. From 2018 onwards, Susanne Bieger and Bernhard Karl will share the management role. From 2006 to 2014 the festival took place in the Babylon cinema . The cinema in the KulturBrauerei has been the official festival center since 2015 .

Around the World in 14 Films is a cinematic trip around the world and a cinematic review of the year in one. As the “Festival of Festivals”, the film festival presents 14 outstanding works by young world cinema for ten days at the end of each year in the form of a cinematic world tour that leads around the globe. The 14 works form the core of the festival and come from different countries and cultures around the world, from South America to Mexico and North America to Africa, through parts of Europe via Russia to the Middle East to the Far East. The program is supplemented by special screenings, thematic series and a German film of the year. All festival entries were previously discussed and awarded at the leading film festivals in Cannes, Locarno, Rotterdam, San Sebastián, Sundance, Toronto and Venice. The films will be shown for the first time in Berlin and will be presented live as sponsors by artists, directors, actors and personalities from cinema, culture, visual arts, theater and politics.

Special series

  • 2018 and 2019: Berlinale Spotlight: World Cinema Fund - In cooperation with the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), the festival showed outstanding films made with the help of the Berlinale's World Cinema Fund (WCF).
  • 2018: Film, women and characters - gender, intersectionality and their meaning for complex female characters. Guests: Cristina Gallego , Ash Mayfair and Céline Perreard. The discussion format introduced in 2018 deals with different topics relating to women and film every year. It is curated and moderated by Susanne Bieger.

From 2009 to 2017 the festival awarded the IFA (Intercultural Film Award) together with the ifa ( Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations ). The undoped prize was awarded to a film that deals with the topics of dialogue between cultures, cultural exchange or intercultural dialogue in a special way in terms of content and aesthetics. The jury members included a. Nasrin Bassiri, Bibiana Beglau , Ayat Najafi, Sibel Kekilli , Andreas Kilb , Christiane Peitz, Cristina Nord, Hans-Georg Rodek and Ina Weisse .

In 2019, the festival will award the ARRI Media Prize for the first time, sponsored by ARRI Media. The prize is awarded by a jury to a director for the best director of a festival contribution.
