Otar Iosseliani ( Georgian : ოთარ იოსელიანი ; born February 2, 1934 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian- French film director . He was repeatedly censored because of socially critical films in the Soviet Union and emigrated to France in 1982.

Life

Iosseliani studied music at the Tbilisi Conservatory and received a diploma in composition, conducting and piano in 1952. In 1953 he went to Moscow , studied mathematics for two years, then switched to the State Film Institute (WGIK), learned from directors Oleksandr Dowschenko and Micheil Tschiaureli and graduated in 1961 with a directing diploma.

While still a student, he began working for the Grusia film studios in Tbilisi, first as an assistant director, then as an editor for documentaries. In 1958 he made his first short film Akvarel . His first long film Aprili (dt. April ), which speaks out against consumerism and the simple life, was due to excessive formalism prohibited. Iosseliani turned away from the film industry and worked from 1963 to 1965 as a sailor and metal work of Rustavi . Aprili wasn't released until 1972.

Iosseliani's first feature film, Die Weinernte , a satire about wine fraud in Georgia, was made in 1966 and won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival . His film A Summer in the Village (Georgian Pastorali ), which confronts intellectuals and farmers in rural Georgia, disappeared from the archive for several years after its completion in 1976 because it was not very edifying . It was later only released for limited distribution. Iosseliani felt again robbed of his artistic freedom. After the success of the summer in the village at the Berlin Film Festival in 1982, he left the Soviet Union and emigrated to France.

Hunting for Butterflies received the Grand Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts in 1992 , and on Monday morning a Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival 2002 .

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Iosseliani stayed in France, where he lives in Paris . However, he returned to his homeland for the film Briganten and the three-part television documentary Seule, Géorgie (Eng. Alone, Georgia ).
