Naji Abu Nowar

Naji Abu Nowar (* 1981 in Oxford ) is a British-Jordanian film director .

Life

Nowar was born in Oxford. His parents come from Jordan , the father works like both Nowars brothers in the military. Nowar lived in England until the age of ten , then in Jordan and returned to England to graduate from school. He studied military strategy and war history at King's College London and finally moved to Amman in 2004 .

Nowar was initially self-taught with scriptwriting and eventually graduated from the Rawi Sundance Screenwriters Lab, which was carried out by the Sundance Institute and the Royal Jordanian Film Commission. His teachers included Ziad Doueiri and Zach Sklar . Nowar finished his first screenplay Shakoush at the Rawi Sundance Screenwriters Lab and shot his first short film Death of a Boxer , which was screened at numerous international festivals. With Theeb , a 1916 story about the Bedouin boy Theeb, Nowar's first feature film was released in 2015. To prepare for the film, the director lived with Bedouins in Jordan for a year. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film for Jordan in 2016 .
