Arktis Nordost is a three-part documentary by Helmut Voitl from 1996. It deals with the Tegetthoff expedition .

content

The expedition ship “ Admiral Tegetthoff ” set out in 1872 for a voyage into the then largely unexplored northeastern Arctic . On board were the captain Carl Weyprecht , the 19-man crew and the expedition leader Julius von Payer . On their expedition, they first came across unknown marine animals and bizarre ice formations. Finally the ship was more and more enclosed by the ice until it threatened to sink - completely left to the forces of nature. The expedition ship drifted helplessly towards the northwest for months. On June 30, 1873, the crew completely unexpectedly sighted land and discovered a previously unknown group of islands, which they named " Franz-Joseph-Land " after the Austrian Emperor .

The documentary film series tries to recreate the events of that time in the three parts “Odyssey in the Polar Sea ”, “Oasis in the Ice” and “White Wilderness”. In 2003 another film was made, Die Eisfalle - Die Arctic Odyssey der Tegetthoff, as a continuation of this documentary.

Filming

The film was made as part of five Arctic expeditions to Franz Joseph Land between 1992 and 1996. A true-to-original replica of the "S / X Admiral Tegetthoff" was made in Vienna and transported to the place where the original was enclosed by the pack ice in 1873 . The company " Universum " produced the documentary. The film team worked for several weeks in the arctic winter at temperatures as low as −68 ° C. Never before has there been a film set this far north.
