Assel is a district of the Drochtersen municipality in the Stade district in Lower Saxony .

geography

The place is southeast of the core area of ​​Drochtersen on the state road L 111 between Ritsch and Barnkrug . The Elbe flows north and forms the state border with Schleswig-Holstein here .

The former municipality of Assel had an area of ​​42.20 km².

Together with Krautsand , Ritsch , Drochtersen and Dornbusch , the town of Assel is protected from the flooding of the Elbe by the Ruthenstrom barrage , which was put into operation in 1978 .

North is the 632 ha large nature reserve Asseler sand .

A small part of Assel in the eastern area is also called Wethe .

Culture and sights

  • In the middle of the village stands the St. Martin Church, which was built in the middle of the 16th century on the remains of the previous church from 1141.
  • There are several memorials to the fallen on the site in front of the church.

There is a primary school in Assel.

The Assel school moved into its current location on August 12, 1969. From 1974/75 the school was called Grund- und Hauptschule Assel after the last elementary school class had been dismissed.

In the 1978/79 school year, the secondary school was relocated to Drochtersen. Since then, the Assel school has been run purely as a primary school.

Sports

The football club SV Drochtersen / Assel is a game association founded in 1977 from the clubs TVG Drochtersen and VTV Assel and has been playing in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord since the 2015/16 season . The home games are played in the Kehdinger Stadium (3000 seats) in Drochtersen.

In the center of the village there is a small sport boat harbor with a slipway in Asseler Schleusenfleth (outer depth). The sport boat harbor is connected to the Elbe by the Ruthenstrom flowing to the northwest .

The bus routes 2025, 2026, 2074 and 2704 run through the town.
