The island of Krautsand lies on the left bank of the Lower Elbe and is part of Lower Saxony . It used to be a separate municipality, but has belonged to the Drochtersen municipality since April 1, 1936 .

The island of Krautsand was created from several Elbe islands or sands, which have grown together partly through natural processes and partly through human intervention. These are Kahlesand and Wischhafenersand in the northwest, the original Krautsand (with the so-called Westende and Ostend areas , which are now in the interior of the island), Gauensiekersand south of the Krautsander Inner Elbe and the Asseler Sand at the southeast end. The black barrel sand is not connected to the island .

The former community was incorporated into Drochtersen on April 1, 1936.

The population used to be almost twice as large as it is today, namely 911 for the census on December 1, 1910. The population was 495 on December 31, 2011.

The sculptor Jonas Kötz lives and works on the island. The hallmarks of his wooden sculptures are round noses, heads and bodies. Jonas Kötz is also known for his stories for Sesame Street. For example, one of his sculptures is now in public in Flensburg - Sonwik .
