Black tons of sand is under nature conservation standing Inland Island in the Lower Elbe . It lies across from Asselersand and belongs to the Drochtersen municipality . It is about 3,500 meters long and about 400 meters wide. To the east of the Schwarztonnensand on the other side of the main Elbe channel is the Schleswig-Holstein Pagensand .
The black barrel sand was originally a silt bank , which until 1968 was only visible at low tide . When the Elbe fairway deepened from 12 to 13.5 meters in 1968 and 1969, the island was washed up with dredged sand. In the period from 1969 to 1970, a connection to the Asseler Sand was also built, which was supposed to influence the flow conditions in the Elbe in such a way that the river automatically flushes its bed of silt. However, this connection was washed away by a storm surge in the same year . After the flushing, the island began to be greened to prevent sand drift. a. by planting deciduous trees.
On August 16, 1985, the black barrel sand became a nature reserve . In December 2018, the nature reserve was added to the newly designated nature reserve " Elbe and Islands ". The sign of the nature reserve was NSG LÜ 126.
Since 1973 the area has been looked after by a bird keeper from the Jordsand Association from March to October . Today the sand is a habitat and resting place for many species of waterfowl.
