Bettembourg ( Luxembourgish Beetebuerg , French Bettembourg ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Esch an der Alzette . The place is a railway junction with a marshalling yard .

At Bettemburg-Hüncheringen the Mierbech flows into the Alzette after it has crossed the village.

Worth seeing
The townscape is shaped by the neo-Romanesque dean's church of the Assumption, which was built between 1887 and 1889. The St. Willibrord Chapel from 1777 can be found in Abweiler.
The parish church of St. Joseph in the district of Hüncheringen was built around 1902. The most historically and art-historically significant sacred buildings of the community are, however, the branch churches of St. Andreas in Noertzingen (late Gothic choir, 15th century, nave baroque, 1758) and St. Lambertus and Blasius in Fenningen (choir late Gothic, nave baroque).
In Bettembourg, in addition to the Schlosspark and the Jacquinot Park, you will find the Parc Merveilleux , the only fairytale and leisure park in the Grand Duchy that is particularly attractive for day trips and families with children.

The station Bettembourg has connections to limit Luxembourg-Bettembourg , according Volmerange-les-Mines and to Esch-sur-Alzette . It is served by passenger trains to Diedenhofen , Metz , Nancy , Rodingen , Pétange , Dudelange and Volmerange-les-Mines .
On October 11, 2006, a freight train and a passenger train collided head- on at the French-Luxembourg border near Zoufftgen . Six people were killed and two seriously injured. The reason for this was a human error in the Bettembourg signal box. Four CFL employees were charged and sentenced to prison and suspended sentences in court.
On February 14, 2017, after 8:30 a.m., a passenger train (TER No. 88807) collided with the freight train coming in the opposite direction (No. 49800) shortly after Bettembourg. The driver of the TER in the direction of Thionville did not survive the collision. There were several injured.
According to the Luxembourg railway company CFL , the evaluation of the traffic data of the two trains showed that the driver of the passenger train ignored a distant signal and then ran over a closed (red) main signal.
According to a preliminary report by the Administration des enquêtes techniques (in German: Administration of technical investigations ) published on February 19, 2018 , the so-called crocodile (contactor), which should have informed the train driver of the closed main signal, did not transmit an electrical signal to the contact receiver of the railcar. There was therefore no influence that could have warned the train driver. According to the investigation report, the crocodile had not given a signal in 14 cases in Bettembourg train station.
Due to the lack of influence from the contactor on the track next to the distant signal, the Luxembourg train control system Memor II + did not trigger an emergency brake after 800 m. The train continued its journey unchecked at 123 km / h in the direction of the closed main signal. According to the report, all optical signals along the route worked perfectly, but the train driver did not react to these signals.
