Valpaços is a Portuguese city ( Cidade ) in northern Portugal with 4544 inhabitants. (As of June 30, 2011) .
history
The place was created in the course of the repopulation after the conclusion of the Reconquista and the consolidation of the Kingdom of Portugal, which has been independent since 1139 . It was first known as Paços and got its current name over time. Presumably due to its location on a hill, the name Vale do Paço ( Portuguese for: Valley of Paço) developed into the place name known today.
The district of Valpaços was established in 1836, in the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg . The so newly combined municipalities with the new district town Valpaços previously belonged to the district of Chaves .
Valpaços was promoted to Vila (small town) in 1861 and Cidade (town) in 1999 .
