history

Finds from Dolmen and Antas prove that the municipality was settled at least since the Neolithic Age . Celtiberians later settled here. The Romans who subjugated them converted some of their hill fortes ( Portuguese : Castros ) into their own settlements and built Roman roads and bridges here.

The current place was first mentioned in the 6th century in the course of administrative division of areas. Montalegre got its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1273 from King Alfons III . They were renewed several times by the following kings.

In the course of the administrative reform of 1836, after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal (1822), the district of Montalegre, which had existed up to that point, was made smaller by outsourcing, but has remained an independent district to this day.

Culture, sports and sights

With the Pista Automóvel de Montalegre , the municipality of Padornelos in the Serra do Larouco has a motorsport racetrack on which various national car, motorcycle and truck races are held every year. On 5 and 6 May 2007 on this 1,050-meter circuit, with the start of the season for the FIA Rallycross - European Championship in 2007 held the first major international car race.

The Ecomuseu de Barroso museum is dedicated to the Serra do Barroso ecosystem , but also to the traditions of the district, with exhibitions and cultural events. The Ecomuseu has thematic branches in historical buildings in various parishes in the district.

In the reservoir Barragem do Alto Rabagão (also known as Barragem dos Pisões ) there are a variety of water sports, including sport fishing and angling tourism.

About a quarter of the Montalegre district is in the Peneda-Gerês National Park .
