Murça is a small town ( Vila ) and the seat of a district of the same name ( Concelho ) in northern Portugal . The place is known for its prehistoric stone figure of a wild boar, the Porca de Murça . The Caldas de Carlão thermal baths are located in the municipality of Candedo .

history

The Celtic figure of the Porca da Murça , symbol of the city

Celtiberians lived here. A stone representation of a wild boar, the Porca de Murça ( Portuguese for: The sow of Murça) was probably the object of worship by the indigenous people, and is now the town's symbol . From the 2nd century BC The Romans conquered the area. A well-preserved bridge and some parts of a Roman road have been preserved here.

In the course of the conquest of the land by the Arabs from 711 , today's place was probably founded by Ibn Musa , the governor of Al-Andalus . The place name goes back to him. During the Reconquista , Murça became Portuguese. King D.Sancho II gave the place its first city rights in 1224 .

In 1512 King Manuel I renewed Murça's town charter.
