Mesão Frio is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 4433 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It belongs to the Alto Douro wine-growing region , the first protected wine-growing region in the world to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
history
A prehistoric castro found here ( Portuguese for local ramparts ) served the people since the 2nd century BC. The Romans invaded here as a settlement point, which continued into the Middle Ages. A hostel was established here on a Roman road , where travelers could warm up and eat , and which was known as Mansionis frigidae . The first official mention of the place comes from the year 1059 as Mansion Frigido . Presumably, D. Mafalda had a church built here, from which today's parish São Nicolau takes its name. Queen D.Mafalda was the wife of the first king of the independent Kingdom of Portugal , D.Afonso Henriques , who gave Mesão Frio city rights in 1152. In 1217 King D.Afonso II confirmed the town charter , which King D.Manuel I renewed in 1513.
In the course of the Napoleonic invasions , the place suffered some destruction in 1809 by French troops under General Loison . In 1821 Mesão Frio became the seat of its own circle.
Culture and sights
The district's monuments include a large number of mansions , stone fountains, a Roman bridge, an archaeological excavation site, several historical public buildings and numerous chapels and other sacred buildings , including the Baroque church Igreja Paroquial de Mesão Frio (also Igreja de São Nicolau ). The single-nave parish church contains, among other things, altarpieces made of gilded wood ( Talha dourada ) and Rococo paintings in the coffered ceiling .
In addition, the historic town center is a listed building as a whole.
A signposted, 12 km long hiking trail leads in a circle through hills, wineries, villages and chapels along the landmarks of the first protected wine-growing area in the world, established in 1756, today's UNESCO World Heritage Site Alto Douro . Hotels, pousadas and houses of Turismo rural are especially geared towards individual travelers and wine tourists, and the tourist office (port .: Turismo) offers thematically guided tours.
